Monday’s North American sports scores carried championship consequences in two leagues. The Milwaukee Brewers overwhelmed the Tampa Bay Rays, 10-1, and moved within one victory of the franchise’s first World Series title. Meanwhile, the Golden State Valkyries took a 3-2 lead in the WNBA Finals with a 64-55 home win over the Atlanta Dream.
Elsewhere, Dallas controlled the second half against Philadelphia on Monday Night Football. The NBA produced nine completed games, including a breakout performance by Golden State rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, while the NHL added three road victories.
MLB World Series: Brewers 10, Rays 1
Milwaukee turned a tense World Series game into a rout with an eight-run fifth inning, and every run in the rally scored with two outs. That made it the highest-scoring two-out inning in World Series history. Consequently, the Brewers seized a 3-0 series lead and moved one win from a championship.
Jackson Chourio set the pace with four hits in five at-bats. Brice Turang delivered a two-run single, and Cooper Pratt added a two-run double as the Brewers repeatedly extended the inning. On the mound, Robert Gasser worked six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out three.
Tampa Bay did not score until Yandy DÃaz doubled home a run in the ninth. By then, however, Milwaukee had removed all doubt.
- Winning pitcher: Robert Gasser (1-0)
- Losing pitcher: Freddy Peralta (2-1)
- Series: Brewers lead, 3-0
WNBA Finals: Valkyries 64, Dream 55
Golden State answered a difficult Game 4 defeat with its best defensive performance of the series. Kiah Stokes scored 13 points, made three 3-pointers, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots. Veronica Burton also scored 13 and collected eight rebounds.
Atlanta’s Rhyne Howard led all scorers with 20 points and added five rebounds. Still, the Dream could not generate enough offense against the Valkyries’ half-court defense. As a result, Golden State will travel to Atlanta for Game 6 on Thursday with a chance to clinch the title.
WNBA Star of the Game: Kiah Stokes, Golden State Valkyries — 13 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and three made 3-pointers.
- Series: Valkyries lead, 3-2
- Next game: Game 6, Thursday, October 29, in Atlanta
NFL: Cowboys 38, Eagles 21
Dak Prescott threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns as Dallas pulled away from Philadelphia. Two of those scoring passes went to CeeDee Lamb. In addition, Javonte Williams produced a career-high 155 rushing yards, giving the Cowboys balance after halftime.
Dallas improved to 3-4, while Philadelphia fell to 2-5 with its fifth consecutive defeat. The Eagles remained competitive early, but the Cowboys’ rushing attack and Prescott’s efficiency decided the game.
NBA: Nine Games Fill Monday’s Schedule
Golden State Warriors 134, Denver Nuggets 114
Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg delivered the night’s biggest individual performance with 31 points and 12 rebounds. Golden State shot 54.1 percent from the floor, made 22 of 44 attempts from 3-point range and won the rebounding battle, 50-36. Therefore, Denver never found a sustained answer after the Warriors established their rhythm.
Cleveland Cavaliers 127, Minnesota Timberwolves 125 — overtime
Donovan Mitchell scored 26 points, including five in overtime, as Cleveland survived the closest NBA game of the night. Minnesota forced the extra period, but Mitchell supplied the decisive late offense.
Boston Celtics 134, Chicago Bulls 99
Payton Pritchard scored 28 points and connected on seven 3-pointers, while Jayson Tatum added 23 points in 27 minutes. Boston’s shooting and pace broke the game open early, and the Celtics never allowed Chicago back into contention.
Milwaukee Bucks 110, Indiana Pacers 102
Tyler Herro recorded 23 points and 10 rebounds as Milwaukee earned its first victory of the season. Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton scored 22, but the Bucks made the stronger closing push.
Oklahoma City Thunder 125, Phoenix Suns 114
Oklahoma City held Phoenix at arm’s length and finished with an 11-point win. Jalen Green scored 20 points for the Suns, but Devin Booker managed only three points in 33 minutes. That lack of production left Phoenix without enough firepower to complete a comeback.
Houston Rockets 120, Atlanta Hawks 110
Houston shot 53 percent and made 26 of 32 free throws. Although the Rockets committed 25 turnovers, their efficiency and repeated trips to the line offset those mistakes.
Charlotte Hornets 110, Washington Wizards 103
Charlotte protected its home floor with a seven-point victory. The Hornets created enough separation down the stretch to prevent Washington from turning the final minutes into a one-possession finish.
Dallas Mavericks 113, Miami Heat 109
Dallas prevailed in a four-point road game, the narrowest regulation result on Monday’s NBA schedule. Miami stayed within striking distance, but the Mavericks executed well enough late to secure the win.
Memphis Grizzlies 110, Utah Jazz 105
Memphis closed out a five-point road victory in Utah. The Jazz kept the margin tight, yet the Grizzlies protected their advantage through the final possessions.
NHL: Road Teams Sweep the Three-Game Slate
The Los Angeles Kings produced the night’s highest NHL total in a 6-3 victory over the New York Rangers. Meanwhile, Calgary doubled up Toronto, 5-2. Detroit completed the road sweep by edging Edmonton, 4-3, in the tightest hockey result of the evening.
