Minnesota remains atop the WNBA at 31-8

The WNBA scores and results from August 29, 2026 featured convincing victories from the New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury as the league reached its final day of action before the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup break.

New York Liberty 85, Chicago Sky 66

NEW YORK — The Liberty responded to one of their worst offensive performances of the season with a convincing 85-66 victory over Chicago.

Han Xu provided the unexpected offensive spark, coming off the bench to score a season-high 19 points while shooting 6-of-8 from the field and 2-of-3 from 3-point range. She also grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots in fewer than 20 minutes.

Breanna Stewart nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds while adding two steals and two blocks.

New York also received 11 points apiece from Leonie Fiebich, Rebekah Gardner and Jonquel Jones, giving the Liberty the balanced scoring attack they lacked in their previous loss to Golden State.

Chicago received 14 points from Natasha Cloud and 13 from Sydney Taylor.

The Liberty established control early.

New York scored the final 10 points of the first quarter to build a 21-11 advantage. Fiebich’s 3-pointer stretched the margin to 15 midway through the second quarter, and the Liberty carried a commanding 42-28 lead into halftime.

New York finished with 11 made 3-pointers and converted 20 of 22 free throws.

The victory improved the Liberty to 24-16, while Chicago dropped to 15-25.

Turning Point: New York’s 10-0 run to close the first quarter. The Liberty transformed a close opening period into a double-digit advantage and never surrendered control.

Star of the Game: Han Xu — 19 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Han provided tremendous production off the bench and delivered her best scoring performance of the season.

Phoenix Mercury 101, Toronto Tempo 69

PHOENIX — The Mercury entered Saturday desperate to end a four-game losing streak. They responded with one of their most dominant victories of the season.

Phoenix routed Toronto 101-69, using a remarkably balanced offense in which six players scored in double figures.

Noemie Brochart and Shay Ciezki led the Mercury with 15 points apiece, while Sami Whitcomb added 14.

Marta Suarez contributed 13 points off the bench, Maddy Westbeld scored 12 and Lexi Held finished with 11.

Alyssa Thomas controlled the offense without needing to score heavily, distributing 12 assists. It marked her 11th game of the season with at least 10 assists.

Phoenix jumped ahead 27-17 after the first quarter before putting the game out of reach during the next two periods.

The Mercury scored 31 points in the second quarter and another 30 in the third. Phoenix carried an enormous 88-49 advantage into the fourth quarter after outscoring Toronto 61-32 across the middle two periods.

Toronto struggled to generate consistent offense.

Isabelle Harrison led the Tempo with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Kiki Rice scored 14 and Laura Juskaite added 10.

Phoenix’s defense forced Toronto into 16 turnovers while the Mercury committed only seven.

The 32-point victory was Phoenix’s second-largest margin of the season.

Phoenix improved to 14-26, snapping its four-game losing streak. Toronto fell to 11-29.

Turning Point: Phoenix’s second and third quarters. The Mercury outscored Toronto 61-32 across those 20 minutes, transforming an early advantage into a 39-point lead entering the fourth.

Star of the Game: Alyssa Thomas — 12 assists. Phoenix had six double-digit scorers, making the offensive facilitator the logical choice. Thomas consistently created quality opportunities as the Mercury produced 101 points.

The eight-team 2026 WNBA playoff field remains set, but postseason seeding continues to provide intrigue heading into the league’s break.

Minnesota remains atop the WNBA at 31-8, with Golden State sitting second at 28-11. Las Vegas follows at 27-13, while Indiana sits at 26-14 and Atlanta at 25-14.

Saturday’s victory was particularly important for New York. The Liberty improved to 24-16, drawing even with Washington in the standings and keeping pressure on the teams above them in the playoff seeding race.

Dallas occupies the eighth playoff position at 23-16.

The postseason field consists of Minnesota, Golden State, Las Vegas, Indiana, Atlanta, New York, Washington and Dallas.
