Saturday’s sports scores delivered one of the wildest college-football days on record, a tense opening to the WNBA Finals and a pair of pivotal baseball and hockey slates. Five of the top seven teams in the AP poll lost, Golden State edged Atlanta in Game 1, and Tampa Bay pulled even in the American League Championship Series.
College football: five top-seven teams fall
College football supplied the day’s defining story. For the first time since 1989, five of the AP poll’s top seven teams lost on the same regular-season Saturday. No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 5 Indiana, No. 6 Alabama and No. 7 Texas all went down, while No. 3 Miami needed two overtimes to survive Florida State.
Florida 27, No. 7 Texas 24
Freshman Tramell Jones Jr. threw two touchdown passes in his first college start, and Florida scored 24 unanswered points to stun Texas in Austin. Jadan Baugh ran for 91 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, Arch Manning threw for 173 yards but lost a crucial late fumble as the Longhorns’ comeback ran out of time.
Auburn 27, No. 1 Georgia 24
Auburn produced the day’s biggest upset by taking down the nation’s top-ranked team in Athens. Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton threw two interceptions and then lost a late fumble, allowing the Tigers to protect a three-point lead and reshape the playoff race.
No. 14 Tennessee 26, No. 6 Alabama 10
Tennessee’s defense controlled the Third Saturday in October and held Alabama to 10 points. The Volunteers’ pressure prevented the Crimson Tide from finding a rhythm and turned a marquee rivalry game into a decisive upset.
No. 4 Ohio State 19, No. 5 Indiana 15
Ohio State ended Indiana’s 22-game winning streak with a late defensive stand. Jeremiah Smith caught the decisive touchdown and tied the Big Ten career record for receiving scores, giving the Buckeyes the signature play in a bruising top-five contest.
No. 8 BYU 28, No. 2 Notre Dame 24
BYU completed the top-two shocker by holding off Notre Dame 28-24. The Cougars made the late plays after the Irish drew within striking distance, handing Notre Dame its first defeat and deepening the national-ranking upheaval.
No. 3 Miami 43, Florida State 35 — 2OT
Miami escaped a rivalry classic in double overtime. Florida State repeatedly answered during regulation, but the Hurricanes scored in the second extra period and then finished the game with a defensive stop. As a result, Miami emerged as the highest-ranked team to survive Saturday.
Elsewhere in the Top 25, No. 22 LSU blanked No. 16 Mississippi State 31-0 behind four Sam Leavitt touchdown passes. No. 9 Ole Miss routed No. 13 Missouri 31-3, while No. 10 Texas Tech overwhelmed Arizona State 53-25.
