The motorsports world spent Thursday looking toward a crowded weekend of racing, but the day’s biggest development came away from the track: Max Verstappen ended months of speculation about his future by extending his contract with Red Bull Racing through the 2030 Formula One season.

No major international championship held a points-paying race Thursday, but there was no shortage of news. Formula One returned from its summer break at Zandvoort, IndyCar prepared for an unprecedented race through Washington, D.C., NASCAR arrived in New Hampshire and Johann Zarco moved closer to a long-awaited MotoGP comeback.

Meanwhile, the most notable newly reported race result came from American dirt racing, where Stewart Friesen won Wednesday night’s Super DIRTcar Series event at Utica-Rome Speedway.

Verstappen Commits to Red Bull Through 2030

Verstappen’s new agreement adds two years to a contract that had been scheduled to expire after the 2028 season. It also closes one of Formula One’s most closely watched driver-market stories.

The four-time world champion had been linked with Mercedes and McLaren as Red Bull navigated a difficult start to Formula One’s new technical era. Verstappen entered the Dutch Grand Prix weekend without a victory this season and 110 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

Despite that downturn, Verstappen described Red Bull as his “second family” and committed himself to the team’s rebuilding project. The Dutchman has been part of the Red Bull organization since 2014 and has accumulated 71 Formula One victories. Yuki Tsunoda will make an unexpected Formula One return during this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix after an injury forced Red Bull to reshuffle its lineup.

Regular Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar suffered a wrist injury while training, prompting Liam Lawson to move into the senior team’s car. Tsunoda was then called to fill Lawson’s seat at Racing Bulls alongside rookie Arvid Lindblad.

Tsunoda said he was vacationing on a beach in Greece when his manager delivered the news. His return will be especially demanding because Zandvoort is hosting a sprint weekend, leaving the Japanese driver with limited practice time in the current-generation car. Reuters

The LCR Honda rider has been sidelined since May after suffering knee-ligament damage in a frightening crash during the restarted Catalan Grand Prix. Zarco’s leg became trapped beneath Francesco Bagnaia’s Ducati in the accident, which also involved Honda rider Luca Marini.

The Frenchman has missed six rounds, but his recovery has progressed more rapidly than initially expected. He must still pass an examination by the championship’s medical staff before being allowed to race Aug. 28–30. Reuters

IndyCar Takes Over the Nation’s Capital

IndyCar is preparing for one of the most unusual events in its history: the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C.

The 147-lap race will be contested Sunday on a 1.7-mile, seven-turn street circuit passing landmarks including the National Archives, National Gallery of Art and Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The layout was originally scheduled to host a 125-lap contest but was lengthened to create a 250-mile race.

The event is part of the United States’ 250th-anniversary celebrations and is currently planned as a one-time attraction. General admission is free through a ticket-registration system.

Alex Palou arrives with a commanding 133-point championship lead over Kyle Kirkwood. Pato O’Ward, currently fifth in the standings, said the event offers IndyCar an opportunity to reach new spectators, while Graham Rahal emphasized the significance of racing in the center of the capital. NASCAR Chase Picture Moves to New Hampshire

NASCAR’s Cup Series heads to New Hampshire Motor Speedway for Sunday’s Dollar Tree 301, the penultimate race of the regular season.

Denny Hamlin holds a 115-point championship lead over Ryan Blaney, the defending winner at the one-mile “Magic Mile.” Joey Logano carries momentum into Loudon after winning the previous Cup race at Richmond Raceway.

For drivers still outside the provisional Chase field, only New Hampshire and the regular-season finale remain to secure a postseason berth. Ryan Preece, a Connecticut native with extensive experience on northeastern short tracks, is among the drivers hoping to use his familiarity with the region to produce a season-changing result.

The Craftsman Truck Series will also race at New Hampshire on Saturday, with its postseason field set to be finalized at the conclusion of the Team EJP 175. NASCAR

Friesen Wins SummerFAST Finale

Result: Stewart Friesen won Wednesday night’s Super DIRTcar Series feature at Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, New York.

Friesen passed Mat Williamson for the lead on Lap 28 and controlled the remainder of the race, giving the Canadian-American driver his second victory of the fifth annual SummerFAST competition.

Endurance Racing and Formula E Developments

Aston Martin completed a major development test of its Valkyrie Hypercar at Silverstone on Wednesday. The manufacturer is evaluating a substantial update package for the 2027 season as it attempts to improve the competitiveness of its LMH program. RACER
