Benfica, Anderlecht seize control in Europa League
Benfica put one foot in the UEFA Europa League proper with a 3–1 home victory over Danish club AGF in the first leg of their playoff.
Rafa Silva struck after only two minutes before Leandro Barreiro doubled the Portuguese club’s advantage in the 31st. Sebastian Jorgensen briefly pulled AGF back into the contest, but Vangelis Pavlidis converted a penalty during first-half stoppage time to restore Benfica’s two-goal cushion.
Anderlecht was equally convincing, winning 3–0 at Kairat Almaty. An own goal by Jaakko Oksanen opened the scoring before Lukáš Ambros and Danylo Sikan completed the damage before halftime.
Jagiellonia Bialystok produced the round’s most decisive result, routing Iberia 1999 by 4–0. Beşiktaş also earned a 3–0 victory over Kauno Žalgiris, while Salzburg escaped Sweden with a 1–0 win over Mjällby courtesy of a stoppage-time own goal. Scores and scorers: ESPN
Ajax erupts after halftime; Brighton held in Norway

Monaco survived a determined challenge from Górnik Zabrze, winning 3–2 in Poland. Mika Biereth, Lamine Camara and Paris Brunner scored for Monaco before the hosts narrowed the margin during the second half.
Brighton was frustrated in a scoreless draw at Tromsø, leaving the English club with work to do in the return leg. Rangers secured a slender 1–0 advantage over Jablonec through Ryan Naderi’s 50th-minute finish, but Cammy Devlin’s red card forced the Scottish club to withstand sustained late pressure.
Elsewhere, Freiburg defeated Motherwell 3–1, Getafe beat Partizan Belgrade 3–1 and Midtjylland blanked Rijeka 2–0. Larne earned an impressive 2–0 away win over Lincoln Red Imps, while Copenhagen and Inter Turku finished scoreless. Conference League scoreboard: ESPN

Messi scores in emotional Philadelphia draw
Lionel Messi scored and supplied an assist as Inter Miami drew 2–2 with the Philadelphia Union, producing his first goal since the death of his father, Jorge.
Messi cut inside and finished with his left foot in the 26th minute before pointing toward the sky during an emotional celebration. The goal was his 13th of the MLS season, moving him within one of the league’s Golden Boot lead.
Miami could not protect its advantage, however, as Neil Pierre’s equalizer secured a point for Philadelphia. Both teams finished with 10 men following red cards to Cavan Sullivan and Yannick Bright. The result stopped Miami’s three-game losing run but extended its winless streak to four. Reuters match report
