Why the AFC South Could Be One of the NFL’s Best Divisions in 2026

The AFC South is no longer a division teams can afford to overlook. With three legitimate playoff contenders and an improving Tennessee Titans team, the 2026 season could turn the AFC South into one of the NFL’s most competitive divisions.

For years, the AFC South has occasionally been treated as an afterthought.

That may be changing.

The 2026 NFL season could produce one of the most competitive AFC South races in recent memory, with the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts all having legitimate arguments for the division title — while the Tennessee Titans have enough new pieces to make life difficult for everybody else.

NFL.com currently ranks the AFC South fifth among the league’s eight divisions, but also notes that the division has the potential to climb significantly in 2026.

That might actually be selling the division short.

Houston Texans: The Team Everyone Has to Beat

The Houston Texans enter the season with perhaps the highest floor in the division.

Houston went 12-5 in 2025 and finished with one of the NFL’s best defenses. DeMeco Ryans’ defense remains loaded with players such as Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter and Derek Stingley Jr., giving the Texans a foundation that should travel well into the postseason.

The biggest question is obvious: C.J. Stroud.

Stroud’s career has taken an unusual turn since his outstanding rookie season. His production has declined over the past two seasons, and Houston’s offensive-line problems have not helped.

The Texans spent significant resources trying to fix that problem this offseason, adding veterans such as Wyatt Teller and Braden Smith while selecting Keylan Rutledge in the first round. Houston also added running back David Montgomery.

If Stroud can regain the confidence and efficiency he displayed as a rookie, the Texans could be more than an AFC South favorite.

They could be an AFC contender.

Jacksonville Jaguars Are Not Going Away

Then there are the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jacksonville is coming off a remarkable 13-4 season in which the Jaguars went from 4-13 in 2024 to division champions one year later.

That turnaround was not a fluke.

Head coach Liam Coen has established himself as an important part of Jacksonville’s future, while Trevor Lawrence remains the centerpiece of the franchise.

The Jaguars also have plenty of young talent capable of taking another step forward.

One particularly fascinating player is Travis Hunter, whose ability to contribute at both cornerback and wide receiver could give Jacksonville a unique weapon. NFL.com identified Hunter’s role as one of the team’s biggest storylines entering the season.

Jacksonville does have questions to answer. The Jaguars lost running back Travis Etienne, and there are concerns about replacing the production of linebacker Devin Lloyd.

But there is little reason to believe this team suddenly becomes irrelevant.

In fact, Jaguars team analysts are predicting another double-digit-win season and another run at the AFC South championship.

Don’t Sleep on the Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts might be the most interesting team in the division.

Indianapolis started the 2025 season 8-2 before injuries helped derail the season. Daniel Jones’ return from an Achilles injury is perhaps the single biggest storyline surrounding the franchise heading into 2026.

If Jones is healthy and can play at the level he showed during the Colts’ hot start, Indianapolis could be considerably better than its 8-9 record from a year ago suggests.

The Colts also have Jonathan Taylor, a proven difference-maker in the running game, while Shane Steichen remains in charge.

There are legitimate concerns, particularly regarding health and some personnel losses, but Indianapolis does not need to become the best team in the AFC to win the AFC South.

It simply needs to be better than Houston and Jacksonville often enough.

That is hardly an impossible task.

And Then There Are the Titans

Tennessee is the long shot.

But that does not mean the Titans are irrelevant.

The Titans went just 3-14 last season, but the franchise made significant changes heading into 2026.

Robert Saleh is now the head coach, Brian Daboll is involved in developing second-year quarterback Cam Ward, and Tennessee aggressively upgraded its roster during the offseason.

Ward is the biggest variable.

The former No. 1 overall pick showed flashes during his rookie season, but his consistency needs to improve. The Titans attempted to make his job easier by adding wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson and selecting Carnell Tate with the fourth overall pick.

If Ward takes a significant Year 2 leap, Tennessee could go from a three-win team to a respectable football team surprisingly quickly.

They probably are not ready to win the division.

But they could absolutely ruin somebody else’s season.

The AFC South Could Be a Weekly Battle

This is what makes the AFC South so intriguing.

The division does not necessarily have four Super Bowl contenders. Instead, it has three teams with legitimate playoff aspirations and a fourth team that could be significantly better than it was a year ago.

That creates the potential for some brutal divisional games.

Houston cannot assume it will sweep Jacksonville.

Jacksonville cannot assume Indianapolis will be an easy opponent.

Indianapolis cannot afford to overlook Tennessee.

And Tennessee has nothing to lose.

CBS Sports described the 2026 AFC South as a wide-open race, with Houston only a slight favorite and Jacksonville and Indianapolis viewed as legitimate threats.

That is a significant change from the perception of the division not long ago.

The AFC South Could Produce Multiple Playoff Teams

Perhaps the biggest reason to believe the AFC South could be one of the NFL’s better divisions is that the winner may not be the only team heading to the postseason.

Houston and Jacksonville both have the talent to compete for the AFC South.

Indianapolis has enough talent to push for a wild-card spot if Jones stays healthy.

And while Tennessee probably has the longest odds of the four teams, the Titans’ offseason improvements make them a much more interesting opponent than their 2025 record suggests.

That could result in a fascinating scenario where the AFC South winner needs to win 11 or even 12 games to secure the division.

More importantly, two or even three AFC South teams could potentially make the playoffs.

Don’t Call the AFC South a Weak Division Anymore

The AFC South may not have the same national profile as the AFC North or AFC West.

It may not have the star power of some of the NFL’s marquee divisions.

But that does not mean it is bad.

Quite the opposite.

The Houston Texans have an elite defense and a quarterback with enormous upside. The Jacksonville Jaguars are coming off a 13-win season and appear to have established a sustainable foundation. The Indianapolis Colts have the talent to rebound if Daniel Jones returns healthy. And the Tennessee Titans are betting heavily on Cam Ward and a dramatically upgraded roster.

That is a pretty compelling division.

The AFC South might not be the NFL’s flashiest division in 2026.

It might, however, be one of its best.

And by the time the playoffs arrive, nobody should be surprised if multiple AFC South teams are still standing.
