Why Klay Thompson Could Be the Miami Heat’s Most Underrated Signing
When the Miami Heat acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason, it was inevitable that the blockbuster trade would dominate the conversation surrounding the franchise.
But if Miami is going to make a serious run in the Eastern Conference this season, another offseason addition could prove nearly as important in a much different way.
Klay Thompson.
The five-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion officially joined the Heat after reaching a buyout agreement with the Dallas Mavericks. Thompson signed a two-year deal worth approximately $11.5 million, with a player option for the second season.
At 36 years old, Thompson is obviously not the same player who once formed the legendary “Splash Brothers” backcourt with Stephen Curry in Golden State.
That does not mean he cannot be extremely valuable to Miami.
In fact, Thompson could be one of the most underrated NBA free-agent signings of the 2026 offseason.
Klay Thompson Gives Miami Something It Desperately Needs
The biggest reason Thompson makes sense for the Heat is simple: shooting.
Miami is building its offense around Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, two players who can create enormous problems around the basket. Adding elite perimeter shooting around those two stars should be one of the organization’s biggest priorities.
Thompson remains one of the best high-volume three-point shooters in NBA history.
He enters the season ranked fourth all-time in made three-pointers and owns a career three-point percentage of 40.9%. Last season with Dallas, he made 202 three-pointers while shooting 38.3% from beyond the arc. It was the 11th season of his career in which he made at least 200 threes.
Those numbers matter because Thompson does not need the basketball in his hands to influence a game.
That could make him an especially dangerous weapon alongside Antetokounmpo.
Giannis Antetokounmpo Could Make Klay Thompson Even Better
One of the biggest advantages of playing with Giannis is the attention he commands.
Defenses cannot casually leave Antetokounmpo alone when he has a runway to the basket. Opponents have to collapse, help and rotate when he gets into the paint.
That creates opportunities for shooters.
Thompson has spent his career thriving in those situations.
If a defense collapses on Giannis and Thompson is standing in the corner, there are few players Miami could rather have taking that shot.
And unlike some players who need a significant offensive role to be effective, Thompson can contribute without running isolation possessions or dominating the ball.
That makes the fit potentially outstanding.
Miami Did Not Need the Old Klay Thompson
There is an important distinction that could get lost in the hype surrounding the signing.
Miami does not need Thompson to be the player who averaged more than 20 points per game during his prime.
The Heat need Klay Thompson the shooter.
They need the veteran who can knock down open threes, move without the ball, punish defensive mistakes and provide another perimeter threat when defenses focus on Giannis and Bam.
Last season, Thompson averaged 11.7 points in 69 games for Dallas while playing 21.7 minutes per game. He also made 202 three-pointers.
Those numbers may not look spectacular.
But they could be exactly what Miami needs from him.
The Contract Makes the Signing Even More Interesting
Another reason Thompson could become an underrated addition is the relatively modest financial commitment.
Miami landed Thompson on a two-year deal worth approximately $11.5 million, with the second season reportedly carrying a player option. Thompson also gave up a significant amount of money compared with what he was scheduled to make in Dallas.
For a championship-caliber roster, getting a player with Thompson’s résumé and shooting ability at that price is a worthwhile gamble.
The Heat are not asking him to carry the franchise.
They are asking him to fill a specific role.
That distinction is important.
Klay Thompson Also Brings Championship Experience
There is another element of this signing that does not show up in a box score.
Thompson knows what championship basketball looks like.
He won four NBA championships with Golden State and was part of one of the greatest dynasties of the modern NBA. He has played in enormous games, dealt with intense playoff pressure and experienced both the highs and lows of an NBA title chase.
Miami’s roster now includes several players who will be expected to perform under significant postseason pressure.
Thompson can walk into that environment having already lived through it.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has also emphasized that Thompson brings more than shooting, pointing to his basketball IQ, experience and ability to contribute on both ends of the floor.
There Are Obviously Questions
Calling Thompson an underrated signing does not mean pretending there are no concerns.
He is 36 years old and coming off a season in which his overall production declined. His 38.3% three-point shooting was solid, but his scoring, minutes and efficiency were well below the peak numbers he produced during his Golden State years.
Miami will also need to manage his workload.
The Heat do not need Thompson playing 35 minutes every night.
They need him healthy and effective when the postseason arrives.
That could actually make Spoelstra’s job easier. Instead of expecting Thompson to be a primary offensive option, Miami can deploy him strategically and maximize what he still does exceptionally well.
Klay Thompson Could Become a Playoff Difference-Maker
The regular season is only part of the equation.
When the playoffs arrive, spacing becomes even more important.
Opponents will spend entire series trying to figure out how to contain Antetokounmpo. They will load up on him, change coverages and attempt to force Miami’s supporting cast to beat them.
That is precisely when having a player like Thompson can become valuable.
One hot shooting game can completely change a playoff series.
And Thompson has demonstrated throughout his career that he is capable of producing extraordinary shooting performances. He still holds the NBA record with 14 three-pointers in a single game.
Miami does not need that version of Thompson every night.
It simply needs him to still be capable of producing it when the moment demands it.
The Verdict
The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade will understandably receive most of the attention when people evaluate the Miami Heat’s offseason.
But Klay Thompson could quietly become one of the most important pieces of the new roster.
He brings elite shooting, championship experience, veteran leadership and a skill set that makes sense alongside both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
Most importantly, Miami is not asking Thompson to be the superstar he once was.
It is asking him to be Klay Thompson.
If he can stay healthy, knock down open threes at something close to his career rate and provide reliable minutes during the postseason, the Heat may have found one of the best value signings of the 2026 NBA offseason.
Klay Thompson may no longer be a superstar. But that does not mean he cannot be a major reason the Miami Heat become a serious problem in the Eastern Conference.
