Will The Colts Collapse Again?

The AFC South enters the 2026 NFL season with two legitimate championship contenders, an Indianapolis team attempting to avoid another late-season collapse and a Tennessee franchise betting its future on the development of Cam Ward.

Jacksonville completed one of the NFL’s biggest turnarounds in 2025, improving from 4-13 to 13-4 and winning the division under first-year head coach Liam Coen. Houston finished only one game behind at 12-5 and reached the divisional round for the third consecutive season.

Indianapolis started 8-2 before losing seven consecutive games and finishing 8-9. Tennessee ended a difficult rebuilding season at 3-14, including an 0-6 record against divisional opponents.

Despite Jacksonville’s division championship, MyBookie lists Houston as the favorite to win the AFC South in 2026. The Jaguars are a competitive second choice, followed by the Colts and Titans.

Houston Texans Preview: An Elite Defense Awaits Help From the Offense

2025 record: 12-5
MyBookie AFC South odds: +114
MyBookie Super Bowl odds: +1800
Projected record: 12-5

Houston won 12 games and reached the divisional round last season despite an offense that frequently struggled to protect quarterback C.J. Stroud. That combination illustrates both the strength of the Texans’ defense and the frustration surrounding a talented team that has not yet broken through to the AFC Championship Game.

Stroud threw for 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions during the 2025 regular season. Those numbers were respectable, but his postseason ended with seven turnovers across two games, including four interceptions in Houston’s loss to New England.

The Texans have publicly supported Stroud and remain engaged in contract-extension discussions. General manager Nick Caserio has set the beginning of the regular season as the deadline for negotiations, after which the organization intends to postpone talks until the offseason.

Stroud’s development is closely connected to Houston’s offensive line. The Texans ranked near the bottom of the NFL in both pass and run blocking last season, prompting another substantial offseason overhaul.

Houston drafted Keylan Rutledge in the first round and added veterans Wyatt Teller and Braden Smith. Rutledge emerged from training camp as the expected starting left guard, while Aireontae Ersery, Evan Brown, Ed Ingram and Trent Brown are positioned to complete the initial starting group.

If that unit provides even average protection, Stroud should have an opportunity to reconnect with Nico Collins and direct a more efficient offense. Tank Dell will begin the season on injured reserve as he continues recovering from the severe knee injury he suffered in December 2024, leaving the Texans temporarily thin at receiver.

David Montgomery takes over as Houston’s leading running back. His physical style and ability to avoid negative plays should help the Texans remain in manageable down-and-distance situations. Woody Marks and British Brooks provide depth behind him.

The defense is the reason Houston can contend for a Super Bowl. Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter form one of the NFL’s most dangerous edge-rushing combinations. Anderson recently agreed to a three-year, $150 million extension, further establishing him as the long-term face of the defense.

Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter anchor the secondary, with Calen Bullock and Reed Blankenship at safety. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair provides physicality in the middle, while second-round defensive tackle Kayden McDonald could become an immediate contributor.

Biggest strength: A fast, deep defense capable of pressuring quarterbacks and creating turnovers.

Biggest concern: Whether the rebuilt offensive line can protect Stroud and help him rediscover his rookie-year confidence.

Outlook: Houston has the AFC South’s most complete roster. The Texans will remain vulnerable when their offensive line struggles, but their defense provides an exceptionally high floor. If Stroud rebounds, this team can contend for more than a division championship.

Jacksonville Jaguars Preview: Can Trevor Lawrence Build on His Breakthrough?

2025 record: 13-4
MyBookie AFC South odds: +228
MyBookie Super Bowl odds: +2800
Projected record: 11-6

Jacksonville’s transformation under Coen was immediate and remarkable.

After finishing 4-13 in 2024, the Jaguars improved by nine victories, won the AFC South and closed the 2025 regular season with eight consecutive wins. Their defense finished first against the run and second in takeaways, while Lawrence developed into an MVP candidate during the second half of the year.

Lawrence finished the season with 29 touchdown passes and added a career-high nine scores on the ground. His 38 total touchdowns ranked behind only Matthew Stafford and Josh Allen. More importantly, Lawrence appeared increasingly comfortable operating Coen’s system as the season progressed.

That continuity gives Jacksonville reason to believe last season was the beginning of a sustainable run. Lawrence enters his second year in the offense with a strong collection of receiving options led by Brian Thomas Jr.

Thomas is Jacksonville’s premier vertical threat, while Jakobi Meyers and Parker Washington provide dependable complementary targets. Tight end Brenton Strange should also remain involved in an offense capable of attacking every area of the field.

The most fascinating player is Travis Hunter. The 2025 No. 2 overall pick missed the final 10 regular-season games of his rookie year with a knee injury. Jacksonville plans to feature Hunter primarily at cornerback while continuing to design selected offensive packages for him.

Hunter’s health and defensive development could significantly raise Jacksonville’s ceiling. If he becomes capable of covering an opponent’s top receiver, the Jaguars will have greater freedom to dictate matchups throughout the secondary.

The running game will look different following Travis Etienne’s departure. Bhayshul Tuten is expected to receive a larger role after recording only 83 carries behind Etienne last season. Chris Rodriguez Jr. provides a more physical alternative, although he spent part of the offseason recovering from foot surgery.

Josh Hines-Allen remains the defense’s leading pass rusher. Jacksonville’s defense produced sacks and turnovers throughout training camp, but sustaining last season’s takeaway rate could prove difficult. Turnovers often fluctuate from one year to the next, placing additional pressure on the unit to generate consistent stops without relying on game-changing mistakes.

Biggest strength: Lawrence’s growing command of Coen’s system and a deep group of pass-catching options.

Biggest concern: Defensive regression if the Jaguars cannot reproduce last season’s exceptional takeaway production.

Outlook: Jacksonville is a credible threat to repeat. The Jaguars have the quarterback, coaching and explosive playmakers necessary to win 11 or more games. Their +228 division odds offer an intriguing return for a defending champion that appears to have been undervalued relative to Houston.

Indianapolis Colts Preview: Daniel Jones Faces a Defining Season

2025 record: 8-9
MyBookie AFC South odds: +380
MyBookie Super Bowl odds: +5000
Projected record: 8-9

Indianapolis appeared headed for the postseason after opening last year 8-2. Instead, a seven-game losing streak left the Colts at 8-9 for the second consecutive season and outside the playoff field.

The collapse placed considerable pressure on head coach Shane Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard. Another middling season could lead the organization to make substantial changes.

Indianapolis recommitted to Daniel Jones after the quarterback suffered a torn Achilles. Jones returned to individual and seven-on-seven work during the offseason and entered training camp as the established starter. Anthony Richardson Sr. and Riley Leonard provide depth, but the Colts’ decision to sign Jones to a new contract made their immediate plan clear.

Jones must demonstrate that he can provide consistent quarterback play over an entire season. The Colts possess enough offensive talent to compete, beginning with running back Jonathan Taylor.

Taylor remains capable of carrying a large workload and producing explosive runs. Tight end Tyler Warren gives Jones a dangerous target in the middle of the field, while Josh Downs is positioned for an expanded role following Michael Pittman Jr.’s departure.

Indianapolis also signed veteran Keenan Allen, who brings 1,055 career receptions and extensive experience working in a timing-based passing attack. Allen is expected to be available for Week 1 despite a recent arrest, although the legal and NFL disciplinary processes remain unresolved.

The Colts’ defense has the potential to keep them in the playoff race. Indianapolis acquired Sauce Gardner during the 2025 season, giving the secondary a legitimate No. 1 cornerback. Charvarius Ward will start opposite Gardner, while Cam Bynum and rookie AJ Haulcy headline the safety group.

Laiatu Latu is expected to lead the pass rush, with DeForest Buckner remaining an important presence on the defensive interior. Rookie edge defenders George Gumbs Jr. and Caden Curry also earned roster spots following impressive preseason performances.

Biggest strength: A talented running game and an improved secondary led by Gardner.

Biggest concern: Jones’ durability and the psychological effect of last season’s seven-game collapse.

Outlook: Indianapolis has enough talent to challenge for a wild-card position, but the Colts must prove they can finish. Jones does not need to become an elite quarterback; he needs to protect the football, remain healthy and take advantage of Taylor, Warren, Downs and Allen. An eight- or nine-win season appears most likely.

Tennessee Titans Preview: Cam Ward’s Development Defines the Rebuild

2025 record: 3-14
MyBookie AFC South odds: +900
MyBookie Super Bowl odds: +12000
Projected record: 6-11

The Titans enter 2026 with another new coaching staff and one overriding objective: develop Ward into a franchise quarterback.

Ward showed flashes after Tennessee selected him first overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, but the Titans finished 30th in scoring and 31st in total offense. The organization changed coaches during his rookie season before hiring Robert Saleh to oversee the rebuild.

Saleh’s most important decision was hiring Brian Daboll as offensive coordinator. Daboll has experience developing quarterbacks, including Josh Allen in Buffalo, and his work with Ward could determine the long-term direction of the franchise.

Ward possesses the arm strength and improvisational ability to make exceptional plays. His biggest challenges are accuracy, processing and learning when to accept a routine completion instead of attempting something spectacular.

Saleh has emphasized that the Titans cannot ask Ward to play “Superman” on every snap. Building an offense that gives him manageable reads and reliable support will be essential.

Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears give Tennessee two capable running backs. Wan’Dale Robinson adds quickness and yards-after-catch ability to the passing game, while Gunnar Helm leads the tight-end group.

The Titans released Will Levis during final roster cuts, leaving Mitchell Trubisky as Ward’s primary backup. That decision further established the offense as Ward’s team.

Defensively, Saleh will build around Jeffery Simmons, one of the league’s premier interior linemen. Tennessee carried 10 defensive linemen on its initial roster, signaling its desire to establish depth and control the line of scrimmage.

The Titans should become more organized and competitive under Saleh, but the roster remains several pieces away from matching Houston or Jacksonville. Progress will be measured by Ward’s decision-making, the development of the offensive line and the defense’s ability to prevent games from getting away early.

Biggest strength: Ward’s long-term upside and a coaching staff constructed specifically to support his development.

Biggest concern: A young offense that lacks proven, high-level playmakers around its quarterback.

Outlook: Tennessee should improve on last season’s three victories, but a division championship remains unlikely. Six wins and meaningful progress from Ward would represent a successful first season under Saleh.

2026 AFC South Predictions and Projected Standings

  1. Houston Texans: 12-5
  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: 11-6
  3. Indianapolis Colts: 8-9
  4. Tennessee Titans: 6-11

The AFC South championship should come down to Houston and Jacksonville.

The Jaguars are the defending champions and may possess the division’s best offense. Lawrence’s improvement under Coen appears sustainable, and Jacksonville has enough receiving talent to remain among the AFC’s highest-scoring teams.

Houston earns the narrow edge because of its defense. The combination of Anderson, Hunter, Stingley and Lassiter can disrupt any opponent, while even modest improvement from the offensive line could help Stroud regain his confidence.

Indianapolis has enough talent to remain relevant into December, but the Colts must prove they can avoid another collapse. Tennessee should improve under Saleh and Daboll without being ready to challenge the division’s top two teams.

Final prediction: Houston wins the AFC South, Jacksonville earns a wild-card berth and the division sends two teams to the postseason for the second consecutive year.
