2026 AFC East Preview: Bills, Patriots, Jets and Dolphins Predictions & Odds
2026 AFC East Preview: Bills and Patriots Lead Division Race as Jets, Dolphins Rebuild
The AFC East enters the 2026 NFL season as a two-team race on paper, with the Buffalo Bills and defending division champion New England Patriots separated by little more than the sportsbook’s opinion.
New England stormed to a 14-3 record and won the AFC East in 2025, ending Buffalo’s five-year reign atop the division. The Bills still finished 12-5 and earned a wild-card berth, while the Miami Dolphins went 7-10 and the New York Jets finished 3-14.
Despite those results, MyBookie lists Buffalo as the favorite to reclaim the AFC East. The Patriots are a close second, while the Jets and Dolphins face dramatically longer odds.

Buffalo Bills Preview: Josh Allen Gives Buffalo the Highest Ceiling
2025 record: 12-5
MyBookie AFC East odds: -138
MyBookie Super Bowl odds: +1000
Projected record: 12-5
For the first time since 2019, Buffalo enters a season attempting to take back the AFC East rather than defend it. The Bills’ five-year run as division champions ended when New England surged past them in 2025, but the foundation of a championship contender remains firmly in place.
Everything starts with Josh Allen. His combination of arm strength, mobility, creativity and red-zone production gives Buffalo an advantage few NFL teams can match. As long as Allen remains healthy, the Bills possess the quarterback capable of overcoming an uneven performance elsewhere on the roster.
Weapons everywhere
Buffalo also gave Allen a proven receiving threat by acquiring DJ Moore. Moore joins Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, Joshua Palmer and tight ends Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox in a passing attack that should be deeper and more versatile than it was one year ago. James Cook, who led the NFL with 1,621 rushing yards in 2025, remains the centerpiece of the backfield.
The most significant change comes on the sideline. Joe Brady begins his first season as Buffalo’s head coach after the organization moved on from Sean McDermott. Brady already understands Allen and the offense, but directing the entire team will present a different challenge. How quickly Buffalo adjusts to its new leadership could determine whether it wins the division or again settles for a wild-card position.
Defensively, the Bills will look for more pressure from a group featuring Greg Rousseau, Bradley Chubb, Michael Hoecht and Mike Danna. Christian Benford, Maxwell Hairston, Cole Bishop and C.J. Gardner-Johnson headline a secondary that must hold up against an increasingly dangerous New England passing game.
Biggest strength: Josh Allen and an explosive, balanced offense.
Biggest concern: Whether the defense can consistently stop elite opponents—and whether a first-year head coach can immediately deliver playoff-level results.
Outlook: Buffalo is the deserved favorite. The Bills have the division’s best established quarterback, a productive running game and a stronger group of receiving options. They may not run away from New England, but they have enough firepower to regain the AFC East crown.
New England Patriots Preview: Can the Defending Champions Finish the Job?
2025 record: 14-3
MyBookie AFC East odds: +124
MyBookie Super Bowl odds: +1600
Projected record: 11-6
New England’s turnaround under Mike Vrabel was one of the NFL’s defining stories in 2025. The Patriots went 14-3, finished with a division-best plus-170 scoring margin and advanced all the way to Super Bowl LX.
Now comes a different challenge: proving that breakthrough was the beginning of a sustained championship window rather than a one-season surge.
Drake Maye gives New England every reason to believe its success can continue. Maye emerged as an MVP-caliber quarterback during his second NFL season, and the Patriots subsequently made an aggressive move to acquire A.J. Brown from Philadelphia.
Lots of returned firepower
Brown supplies the true No. 1 receiver every young quarterback needs. Romeo Doubs, DeMario Douglas and tight end Hunter Henry add complementary options, while Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson give offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels two distinctly different weapons in the backfield. New England also continued investing in its offensive line, including the addition of Alijah Vera-Tucker.
The Patriots’ defense again should be capable of keeping them in close games. Christian Gonzalez is the centerpiece of the secondary, while Christian Barmore and Dre’Mont Jones anchor the defensive interior. Harold Landry III will miss at least the beginning of the season on the physically unable to perform list, however, creating an early test for New England’s edge depth.
Regression is the obvious concern. Winning 14 regular-season games is difficult to repeat, and New England can play very well without matching last year’s record. The Patriots will also receive every opponent’s best effort after reaching the Super Bowl.
Biggest strength: Maye’s development combined with an increasingly complete supporting cast.
Biggest concern: The possibility of natural regression after a 14-win season, particularly if injuries weaken the pass rush or offensive line.
Outlook: New England is Buffalo’s only serious preseason challenger for the division. At +124, the Patriots offer a more attractive potential return than the favored Bills. Another 14-win season may be unlikely, but a second consecutive AFC East championship is entirely realistic.
New York Jets Preview: Geno Smith Returns to Lead Another Reset
2025 record: 3-14
MyBookie AFC East odds: +1900
MyBookie Super Bowl odds: +20000
Projected record: 6-11
The Jets enter 2026 searching for competence, stability and meaningful progress after a three-win season in which they went 0-6 against AFC East opponents and were outscored by 203 points.
Their latest attempt to solve the quarterback position brings a familiar face back to New York. Geno Smith, originally drafted by the Jets in 2013, returns after rebuilding his career in Seattle and later playing for Las Vegas. Rookie fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik is positioned as his backup and a possible developmental option for the future.
Smith does not need to transform the Jets into an offensive powerhouse. He needs to provide stable, professional quarterback play while getting the ball to Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell and Breece Hall. New offensive coordinator Frank Reich should bring experience and structure to a unit that badly needs both.
Can they protect?
The primary question is whether the offensive line can protect Smith consistently. New York acquired interior lineman Jordan Meredith shortly before final roster cuts, but that move reflected the team’s continuing concerns about its depth up front. If the protection breaks down, the Jets could again struggle to sustain drives regardless of the talent at the skill positions.
Head coach Aaron Glenn also must oversee a major defensive improvement. The Jets surrendered 503 points in 2025, the highest total in the division. That cannot happen again if New York hopes to remain competitive deep into the season.
Biggest strength: A potentially productive group of skill-position players led by Wilson and Hall.
Biggest concern: Offensive-line depth and a defense coming off a disastrous season.
Outlook: The Jets should be better, but competing with Buffalo and New England is another matter. Smith raises the team’s floor, and a six- or seven-win season would represent genuine progress. Winning the AFC East would require an extraordinary turnaround and major collapses by both favorites.
Miami Dolphins Preview: A Youth Movement Begins Under Jeff Hafley
2025 record: 7-10
MyBookie AFC East odds: +4000
MyBookie Super Bowl odds: +40000
Projected record: 4-13
Miami is no longer trying to squeeze one more postseason run out of its previous core. The Dolphins have entered a full-scale transition under new head coach Jeff Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan.
Malik Willis is expected to open the season at quarterback, with recently acquired Kyle McCord also on the initial roster. Willis flashed intriguing dual-threat ability as a backup in Green Bay, but he has not yet shown that he can produce consistently over a full NFL season.
WR Overhaul
The changes extend throughout the offense. Miami overhauled its receiving corps and will rely on a collection that includes Tutu Atwell, Malik Washington, Jalen Tolbert and several young players. Rather than entering the season with an established, star-powered passing game, the Dolphins will use 2026 to determine which pieces deserve roles in their long-term plan.
Miami’s initial roster is reportedly the youngest in the NFL, with an average age of 25.3. That provides developmental upside but also makes inconsistency nearly unavoidable. Injuries have created additional complications, with defensive tackle Kenneth Grant and linebacker Trey Moore beginning the year on injured reserve with return designations.
Hafley’s defensive background should eventually help Miami develop a faster and more disciplined unit. The immediate question is whether the coaching staff has enough experienced personnel to keep games manageable while the offense finds its identity.
Biggest strength: A young roster that gives the new regime opportunities to develop long-term starters.
Biggest concern: Uncertainty at quarterback and a shortage of proven difference-makers.
Outlook: Miami appears to be building for 2027 and beyond. The Dolphins may produce a few surprises, especially if Willis develops as a passer, but their extremely long division and Super Bowl odds accurately reflect the scope of the rebuild.
AFC East Predictions and Projected Standings
- Buffalo Bills: 12-5
- New England Patriots: 11-6
- New York Jets: 6-11
- Miami Dolphins: 4-13
The division should come down to Buffalo and New England. The Patriots are the defending champions and may have the better all-around defense, but Allen remains the most proven difference-maker in the AFC East. The addition of Moore gives him another dangerous option, and Buffalo’s continuity on offense should help ease the transition to Brady as head coach.
New England is more than capable of repeating, particularly if Maye takes another step and Brown immediately elevates the passing attack. The Patriots may also represent the better betting value because their +124 division price provides a positive return in what appears to be a close race.
The Jets should improve enough to escape the AFC East basement, but their realistic goal is establishing a stable foundation. Miami’s focus should be player development rather than immediate contention.
Final prediction: Buffalo reclaims the AFC East, with New England returning to the playoffs as a wild-card team.
