College Football Top 25 Preview: October 3 Matchups and Spreads

By Gamble Guy | September 30, 2026

Three ranked showdowns headline the college football schedule for October 3: No. 7 Alabama at No. 16 Mississippi State, No. 5 Ohio State at No. 14 Iowa, and No. 8 Florida at No. 25 Missouri. Meanwhile, Miami visits Clemson, Notre Dame travels to North Carolina, and BYU faces TCU in Fort Worth. www.aol.com

The weekend features 16 games involving AP Top 25 teams. With conference competition intensifying, unbeaten contenders face opportunities to strengthen their résumés, while several ranked teams must respond to their first losses. hubapi.cbssports.com

All games are Saturday, October 3. Kickoff times are Eastern. MyBookie and BetUS spreads were checked September 30 and are subject to change.

No. 7 Alabama at No. 16 Mississippi State

Kickoff: Noon

A compelling quarterback matchup takes center stage in Starkville, where unbeaten Alabama faces a Mississippi State team gaining confidence with each victory.

Alabama’s Keelon Russell accounted for 400 yards of offense and five touchdowns in last weekend’s 49–18 win over South Carolina. He threw for 365 yards, completing 21 of 27 passes, while Ryan Coleman-Williams caught two touchdown passes. The Crimson Tide has scored at least 45 points in each of its first four games. Alabama Athletics

However, Mississippi State brings offensive firepower of its own. Kamario Taylor threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns in a 31–24 victory over Missouri. Running back Fluff Bothwell and receiver Anthony Evans III each surpassed 100 yards in their respective categories. Mississippi State

Those performances suggest Alabama cannot focus solely on stopping Taylor’s passing. Bothwell gives the Bulldogs another way to sustain drives, while Evans can punish a defense that commits too heavily to the run.

Mississippi State’s defense faces an equally difficult balancing act. Pressuring Russell without surrendering explosive receptions could determine whether the Bulldogs remain competitive deep into the fourth quarter.

No. 3 Notre Dame at North Carolina

Kickoff: Noon

Notre Dame heads to Chapel Hill after delivering a dominant first half against Purdue. The Irish built a 35–0 halftime lead before finishing a 49–10 victory, with their defense setting the tone through persistent pressure.

Defensive end Bryce Young recorded two sacks, including a forced fumble that Drayk Bowen returned for a touchdown. Meanwhile, CJ Carr threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another score. Notre Dame held Purdue to just 90 first-half yards, including 12 on the ground. Official Athletics Website

That makes North Carolina’s offensive line a central part of this matchup. The Tar Heels need to keep their quarterback out of obvious passing situations, where Notre Dame can attack without respecting the run.

On the other side, North Carolina must prevent Carr from settling into the comfortable rhythm he enjoyed at Purdue. Forcing longer possessions would give the Tar Heels more opportunities to create a defensive stop.

Notre Dame’s task is maintaining that level of execution on another road trip. Its combination of pressure and offensive balance leaves little room for an opponent to recover from an early deficit.

MyBookie spread: Notre Dame −21. BetUS spread: Notre Dame −21. mybookie.ag

UCF at No. 20 Houston

Kickoff: Noon

Houston’s home Big 12 opener matches two 3–1 teams arriving with different conference circumstances. UCF defeated TCU 21–13 in its league opener, while Houston seeks its first conference victory.

The Cougars’ offense has become particularly difficult to get off the field. Houston leads the nation with a 71.1% third-down conversion rate and averages 248 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Conner Weigman has accounted for 14 touchdowns, including six in last weekend’s victory over Georgia Southern. University of Houston Athletics

UCF therefore needs to win early downs. Allowing Houston to face repeated third-and-short situations would give Weigman access to the entire playbook and make defensive substitutions difficult.

The Knights also face a Houston defense allowing only 63.5 rushing yards per game. That could place additional responsibility on UCF’s passing attack to sustain possessions. University of Houston Athletics

For Houston, receivers Koby Young and Amare Thomas provide scoring threats, with four touchdown catches apiece. Their production adds another challenge for a UCF defense already tasked with containing the Cougars’ ground game. University of Houston Athletics

MyBookie spread: Houston −12. BetUS spread: Houston −12. mybookie.ag

Boston College at No. 21 SMU

Kickoff: Noon

SMU returns to ACC competition with an offense that has produced at least 479 yards in every game this season. Kevin Jennings directs that attack and has become the program’s career leader in passing yards and completions.

However, the Mustangs’ defense may be just as important against Boston College. SMU has allowed opponents to convert only 11 of 54 third downs, a 20.4% rate that ranks second nationally. SMU Athletics

Boston College arrives after a 21–14 loss to Virginia Tech. The Eagles need to avoid falling behind the chains against a defense that has repeatedly ended possessions on third down. SMU Athletics

On defense, Boston College must force Jennings to work through extended drives. Allowing quick touchdowns would expose the Eagles to a game in which their offense must constantly chase points.

Recent history also favors SMU, which won last season’s meeting 45–13. Nevertheless, the Mustangs need to turn their statistical advantages into a cleaner, more decisive performance rather than leave openings through turnovers or penalties. SMU Athletics

MyBookie spread: SMU −21. BetUS spread: SMU −21. mybookie.ag

Vanderbilt at No. 2 Georgia

Kickoff: 12:45 p.m.

Georgia’s homecoming game presents Vanderbilt with a challenge that begins immediately after kickoff. The Bulldogs have outscored opponents 63–0 in the first quarter and 133–12 in the first half through four games. University of Georgia Athletics

Those fast starts have allowed Georgia to control its games before opponents can establish a rhythm. Vanderbilt needs productive opening possessions and defensive stops to prevent the afternoon from following that pattern.

The Commodores have a receiving threat in Junior Sherrill, who has accumulated 367 yards and averages 91.8 receiving yards per game. Finding ways to get him involved could help Vanderbilt create the explosive plays necessary to challenge Georgia. Official Athletics Website

Meanwhile, Georgia seeks to extend a six-game winning streak in the series. The Bulldogs won Vanderbilt’s previous visit to Athens 55–0 in 2022. University of Georgia Athletics

For Vanderbilt, this game also begins a demanding stretch: seven of its eight remaining opponents are ranked in the current polls. A competitive performance would offer encouragement, but protecting possessions is essential against a Georgia team that quickly turns mistakes into separation. Official Athletics Website

MyBookie spread: Georgia −24½. BetUS spread: Georgia −24½. mybookie.ag

No. 5 Ohio State at No. 14 Iowa

Kickoff: 3:30 p.m.

Ohio State’s explosive passing attack meets an Iowa defense leading the nation in points allowed. The Hawkeyes surrender just eight points per game and have allowed only three touchdowns across four contests. Official Athletics Website

That defense now faces a receiver capable of changing a game almost immediately. Jeremiah Smith caught four touchdown passes in Ohio State’s victory over Illinois, illustrating the danger of allowing the Buckeyes clean opportunities downfield. apnews.com

Iowa also brings evidence that its offense can deliver under pressure. Hank Brown completed 13 of 19 fourth-quarter passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns in the comeback win at Michigan. His final scoring pass to Reece Vander Zee secured the victory as time expired. Official Athletics Website

The matchup therefore hinges on more than whether Iowa can slow Ohio State. The Hawkeyes need enough sustained offense to keep their defense fresh and prevent the Buckeyes from accumulating possessions.

Special teams could offer Iowa another opening. Braeden Jackson returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown against Michigan, providing the kind of sudden scoring opportunity that can reshape a game against a favored opponent. Official Athletics Website

MyBookie spread: Ohio State −14½. BetUS spread: Ohio State −14½. mybookie.ag

No. 8 Florida at No. 25 Missouri

Kickoff: 3:30 p.m.

Florida’s rise into the top 10 has been powered by an increasingly imposing running game. In the 52–28 victory over Ole Miss, Jadan Baugh rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns, while Duke Clark added 126 yards and another score.

Together, they helped Florida produce 302 rushing yards. Baugh has now recorded five consecutive 100-yard rushing games dating to last season. Florida Gators

Missouri’s first priority is preventing that combination from controlling the afternoon. If the Tigers must repeatedly bring extra defenders toward the line, Florida gains opportunities to attack the space behind them.

However, Missouri can test Florida’s defense, too. The Tigers enter after a road loss to Mississippi State and need to capitalize on scoring opportunities rather than let another conference game slip away.

The setting adds uncertainty. Florida has gone 2–4 in Columbia since Missouri joined the SEC, making this a meaningful examination of whether the Gators can carry their home success onto the road. Florida Gators

Receiver Vernell Brown III also warrants attention after leaving the Ole Miss game with a knee injury. His availability should be checked against the latest pregame report. Florida Gators

MyBookie spread: Florida −5. BetUS spread: Florida −5. mybookie.ag

Auburn at No. 17 Tennessee

Kickoff: 3:30 p.m.

Auburn’s visit to Knoxville carries a coaching storyline alongside the SEC stakes. Tigers coach Alex Golesh returns to face Tennessee after serving as the Volunteers’ offensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022.

That familiarity extends beyond the head coaches, with several former Tennessee staff members now working at Auburn. Both sides therefore have insight into the other program’s offensive approach and preparation. University of Tennessee Athletics

For Tennessee, the more immediate concern is protection. Auburn has recorded 29 tackles for loss, ranking fourth in the SEC, and has intercepted five passes. Defensive coordinator DJ Durkin’s unit can make an offense uncomfortable by creating negative plays and changing its looks before the snap. University of Tennessee Athletics

The Volunteers need a stronger offensive performance after their narrow loss to Texas. Staying ahead of the chains would help them avoid situations in which Auburn can disguise pressure and attack the quarterback.

Meanwhile, Auburn needs to turn its defensive disruption into points. A takeaway matters considerably more if the Tigers can convert the resulting possession into a touchdown.

MyBookie spread: Tennessee −7. BetUS spread: Tennessee −7. mybookie.ag

No. 24 Kentucky at South Carolina

Kickoff: 4:15 p.m.

Kentucky enters Columbia with momentum from a 45–21 victory over South Alabama and an emerging collection of running backs.

C.J. Baxter rushed for 149 yards, Jason Patterson contributed 137 yards and three touchdowns, and Jovante Barnes added 100 yards. It marked the first time Kentucky had three running backs reach 100 rushing yards in the same game. UK Athletics

That gives coach Will Stein options, but reproducing those results against an SEC opponent is a different assignment. South Carolina needs to win at the line and prevent Kentucky’s backs from reaching open space, where missed tackles can become long gains.

The Gamecocks also need to respond after their 49–18 loss at Alabama. Kentucky’s offense can help its defense by controlling possession, which would limit South Carolina’s opportunities to establish momentum. Alabama Athletics

Despite Kentucky’s ranking, both sportsbooks favor South Carolina. The modest spread suggests a matchup in which red-zone efficiency, turnovers and a handful of explosive plays could outweigh any advantage reflected in the polls.

MyBookie spread: South Carolina −3. BetUS spread: South Carolina −2½. mybookie.ag

No. 10 BYU at TCU

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

BYU returns from its open date for its first Big 12 road game of the season. The unbeaten Cougars face a TCU team looking to recover from a 21–13 loss at UCF. BYU Cougars

Quarterback Bear Bachmeier has thrown six touchdown passes and rushed for two more through BYU’s first three games. His ability to contribute as a runner creates an additional responsibility for TCU’s defense, particularly near the goal line.

Running back LJ Martin provides another source of pressure. He rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns against Colorado State, demonstrating BYU’s capacity to produce major gains without depending entirely on its passing attack. storage.googleapis.com

TCU needs to limit those rushing opportunities while keeping enough defenders in coverage to prevent easy throws. Overcommitting in either direction could allow BYU to dictate the matchup.

For the Cougars, the question is how smoothly they resume play after the break. An efficient start would reduce the influence of the home crowd. Conversely, stalled possessions could give TCU the opportunity to turn the game into a tense fourth-quarter contest.

MyBookie spread: BYU −6½. BetUS spread: BYU −6½. mybookie.ag

No. 4 Miami at Clemson

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

Miami brings one of the country’s most productive quarterbacks into a nighttime road game at Clemson. Darian Mensah completed 23 of 27 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns against Central Michigan. Receiver Malachi Toney added six catches for 120 yards. Miami Hurricanes

Clemson, however, has shown recent defensive improvement. In its 24–10 victory over California, the Tigers allowed no offensive touchdowns and held Cal to 145 passing yards. Cornerback Elliot Washington II intercepted two passes. Clemson University Athletics

The offensive contrast is equally interesting. Clemson running back Gideon Davidson rushed for 159 yards and two touchdowns at Cal, while freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds completed 13 of 21 passes for 108 yards. Clemson University Athletics

Those results suggest Clemson’s best route to a competitive game includes productive rushing possessions that limit Miami’s opportunities. Asking Reynolds to repeatedly trade quick scoring drives with Mensah would create a difficult assignment.

Miami also has personnel questions to monitor. Mark Fletcher Jr. missed the Central Michigan game for precautionary reasons, while Chris Wheatley-Humphrey responded with 104 rushing yards. That depth could matter against Clemson’s improving defense. Miami Hurricanes

MyBookie spread: Miami −17. BetUS spread: Miami −16½. mybookie.ag

No. 12 Texas Tech at Colorado

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

Texas Tech’s undefeated start faces a road assignment at a stadium where the program has rarely succeeded. The Red Raiders are 1–4 all-time at Colorado’s Folsom Field, with their only victory coming in 2010.

Recent road results offer a more encouraging picture. Texas Tech has won seven of its last eight away games, including this season’s nonconference victory at Oregon State. Texas Tech Red Raiders

The Red Raiders also arrive with defensive momentum. Austin Romaine returned two interceptions for touchdowns against Sam Houston, and Peyton Morgan added another interception in the 49–14 victory. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Colorado needs to avoid providing similar opportunities. Protecting the ball would force Texas Tech to build scoring drives rather than benefit from defensive touchdowns or short fields.

Meanwhile, Texas Tech must establish offensive consistency in a different environment. Colorado won the most recent meeting 41–27 in Lubbock in 2024, adding another reason for the Red Raiders to take the assignment seriously. A victory would preserve their unbeaten record and reinforce their standing in the Big 12 race. Texas Tech Red Raiders

MyBookie spread: Texas Tech −13. BetUS spread: Texas Tech −13. mybookie.ag

Washington at No. 18 USC

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

Both teams seek a response after their first losses. Washington fell 27–24 to Minnesota, while USC lost 41–27 to Oregon. Saturday also marks the Huskies’ first road game after four consecutive home contests. University of Washington Athletics

USC quarterback Jayden Maiava threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns against Oregon and added a rushing score. Through five games, he has accumulated 1,499 passing yards and 14 touchdown passes. USC Athletics

Washington counters with Demond Williams Jr., whose mobility creates challenges beyond the passing game. However, protection is a concern: Williams was sacked seven times and intercepted twice against Minnesota. USC Athletics

That makes USC’s pressure and Washington’s blocking central to the matchup. Keeping Williams upright would allow the Huskies to exploit his ability to extend plays.

Washington’s defense offers a potential counterweight, entering with six interceptions and eight takeaways. The Huskies have also won the last three meetings between the programs. USC therefore needs efficient offense without providing the turnovers that could help Washington overcome its underdog status. University of Washington Athletics

MyBookie spread: USC −9½. BetUS spread: USC −10. mybookie.ag

Utah State at No. 22 Boise State

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

Boise State’s first Pac-12 game arrives with the Broncos back in the national rankings. Their 32–7 victory at Western Michigan featured balanced offense and a defense that repeatedly ended possessions.

Maddux Madsen threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Running back Dylan Riley added 138 yards and a touchdown, while tight end Matt Wagner caught seven passes for 94 yards and two scores. Boise State University Athletics

Utah State needs to account for all three. Committing extra defenders to Riley could open opportunities for Wagner, while focusing on coverage could give Boise State room to establish its running game.

The Aggies also face a defense that held Western Michigan to two conversions on 14 third-down attempts and stopped all three fourth-down tries. Boise State University Athletics

For Boise State, the priority is sustaining that complete performance. The Broncos converted 10 of 14 third downs and held the ball for more than 36 minutes last weekend. Repeating that possession advantage would give Utah State fewer opportunities to threaten an upset. Boise State University Athletics

MyBookie spread: Boise State −20½. BetUS spread: Boise State −20½. mybookie.ag

McNeese at No. 11 LSU

Kickoff: 7:45 p.m.

LSU returns to Tiger Stadium after a convincing 35–6 victory over Texas A&M. The Tigers’ defense limited Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed to 106 passing yards, while LSU’s offense generated several substantial gains.

Sam Leavitt completed 17 of 23 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson Harris caught six passes for 163 yards and both scores, while Winston Watkins Jr. added 107 receiving yards. The Official Website of LSU Athletics

However, Leavitt’s condition remains a storyline after he played through a calf injury against Texas A&M. His latest availability should be confirmed before publication or kickoff. andthevalleyshook.com

McNeese’s defensive task is preventing LSU’s receivers from creating the same explosive opportunities. Tackling after the catch and avoiding coverage breakdowns would force the Tigers to work through longer drives.

For LSU, the game offers an opportunity to sustain momentum and evaluate depth. Regardless of the quarterback rotation, the Tigers need sound protection, disciplined possessions and an early defensive effort that prevents McNeese from gaining confidence.

MyBookie spread: Not verified. BetUS spread: Not verified. No confirmed spread for this matchup was available on the accessible boards.

No. 6 Indiana at Rutgers

Kickoff: 8 p.m.

Indiana makes its first road trip of the season after surviving Northwestern 29–23. The victory extended the Hoosiers’ winning streak to 20 games and gave coach Curt Cignetti his 150th career victory. Indiana University Athletics

The Northwestern game also provided evidence that Indiana can finish a close contest. Quarterback Josh Hoover scored on a late one-yard run, while receiver Nick Marsh recorded a touchdown reception for the third time in four games. Indiana University Athletics

Rutgers now has an opportunity to test that composure outside Bloomington. The Scarlet Knights need to avoid an early deficit that would allow Indiana to control possession and limit offensive risk.

Defensive disruption could be particularly important. Indiana’s Stephen Daley forced two fumbles and recorded a sack against Northwestern, showing how a few plays can alter the flow of an otherwise competitive game. Indiana University Athletics

The series offers an additional storyline: Rutgers has won the previous three meetings, although the teams have not played since 2023. This will be Cignetti’s first matchup against the Scarlet Knights as Indiana’s coach. Indiana University Athletics

MyBookie spread: Indiana −24. BetUS spread: Indiana −23½. mybookie.ag

Ranked teams with an open date
