Scottie Scheffler Wins 2026 Tour Championship, Captures Second FedEx Cup Title

ATLANTA — Scottie Scheffler completed another remarkable PGA Tour season Sunday by overcoming a three-shot deficit to win the 2026 Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, securing his second FedEx Cup title and the $10 million first-place prize.

The world’s top-ranked golfer entered the final round trailing Viktor Hovland but delivered a closing 4-under-par 66. Scheffler finished the tournament at 16-under 264, three strokes ahead of Hovland, who struggled to a final-round 72 and placed second at 13 under.

Ryan Gerard finished alone in third at 12 under after also shooting 72 on Sunday. Alex Fitzpatrick, Jacob Bridgeman, Min Woo Lee, Russell Henley, Rory McIlroy, Chris Gotterup and Ludvig Åberg shared fourth place at 11 under.

Scheffler’s victory at East Lake brought the PGA Tour season to a fitting conclusion. He won three times during the 2026 campaign, including two victories during the FedEx Cup postseason, and strengthened his case for a fifth consecutive PGA Tour Player of the Year award.

Scheffler erases Hovland’s final-round advantage

Scheffler began Sunday three shots behind Hovland, who had played the opening three rounds in 15 under. The deficit began disappearing almost immediately.

At the 211-yard, par-3 second hole, Scheffler struck a 5-iron that stopped approximately two inches from the cup, leaving him with a tap-in birdie. He then converted a 25-foot birdie putt at the fourth to pull even with Hovland. 

Hovland, meanwhile, could not reproduce the sharp play that had carried him to the top of the leaderboard. He made only one birdie during the final round, while several putts caught the edge of the cup without falling.

Scheffler took the lead for the first time at the 13th hole. Although a difficult lie led to a bogey at No. 14, he responded with the shot that effectively secured the championship at the par-4 16th.

Playing from a fairway bunker, Scheffler hit his approach to 11 feet and converted the birdie putt to establish a two-stroke advantage. Hovland was unable to answer, and Scheffler completed the victory with two closing pars. He was the only golfer among the players in the final three groups to break par Sunday. 

Hovland settles for second after difficult Sunday

Hovland began the day in control of the tournament, but an opening-hole bogey immediately placed his lead under pressure. His closing 72 left him at 13 under and earned him the $5 million second-place prize.

The result also provided Scheffler with a measure of redemption. Hovland had defeated him in a playoff at the Travelers Championship earlier in the season, one of five runner-up finishes recorded by Scheffler in 2026.

Gerard entered the final round only one stroke behind Hovland, but his championship hopes suffered a major blow when he made double bogey on the opening hole. He followed with 13 consecutive pars and finished third at 12 under, earning $3.705 million. 

Victory gives Scheffler another FedEx Cup

The Tour Championship victory gave Scheffler his second FedEx Cup in three years. His first came in 2024.

Scheffler joined Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy as the only golfers to win the season-long FedEx Cup competition more than once. McIlroy remains the record holder with three titles.

Sunday’s win was Scheffler’s third of the season, tying Chris Gotterup, Matt Fitzpatrick and U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark for the most PGA Tour victories in 2026. It was also the 22nd PGA Tour title of Scheffler’s career and his 25th worldwide victory, including his gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. 

Thirteen of Scheffler’s 22 PGA Tour wins have now come by at least three strokes, illustrating his ability to turn close Sunday battles into comfortable victories.

Scheffler passes Tiger Woods in career earnings

The enormous Tour Championship purse also produced a significant financial milestone.

Scheffler collected $10 million from the tournament’s $40 million purse, raising his official PGA Tour career earnings to $130,390,661. That moved him past Woods for first place on the tour’s career money list. Woods had held the top position for nearly 26 years. 

The comparison requires historical context because today’s leading players compete for substantially larger purses than those available during Woods’ prime. The Tour Championship prize money now counts as official earnings, while Woods never played for an individual tournament purse larger than $10 million during his peak seasons.

Nevertheless, the milestone reflects Scheffler’s extraordinary consistency and the financial growth of professional golf.

Scheffler recorded rounds of 65, 67, 66 and 66 at the par-70 East Lake course. Hovland opened with three consecutive rounds of 66 or better before his closing 72.

Even Gary Woodland, who finished 29th among the players who completed the tournament, received $360,000. J.J. Spaun withdrew during the opening round because of a shoulder injury but received the 30th-place payout of $355,000. 

Scheffler ends the PGA Tour season on top

Scheffler began the season by winning The American Express and entered the playoffs with a commanding position in the FedEx Cup standings. He then produced an eight-shot victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship before completing his postseason run at East Lake.

His latest championship combined precise iron play, timely putting and the calm course management that has defined his rise to the top of professional golf.

Hovland controlled the tournament for much of the weekend, while Gerard emerged as one of the championship’s biggest stories. In the end, however, neither could withstand Scheffler’s final-round charge.

The 2026 PGA Tour season concluded with its No. 1 player holding the Tour Championship trophy, another FedEx Cup and a new place atop the career earnings list.
