College Football Week 1 Preview 2026: Top 25 Games, P4 Matchups & Betting Odds
College Football Week 1 Preview: Top 25 Showdowns, Power Four Matchups and Betting Odds
College football’s first full weekend arrives with five days of games, several legitimate College Football Playoff storylines and a handful of matchups capable of reshaping the national conversation before September is a week old.
The Week 1 schedule runs from Thursday, Sept. 3 through Labor Day Monday, Sept. 7. This preview includes games matching one of two criteria: both participants are FBS programs, or an AP Top 25 FBS team is playing an FCS opponent.
The biggest games receive expanded coverage below. Matchups involving an AP-ranked team or two Power Four programs include additional personnel, coaching and season-level context.
Betting lines listed are from BetUS and MyBookie as available Wednesday, Sept. 2. College football odds move frequently, so bettors should verify prices again before wagering.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3
UMass at Rutgers
Rutgers begins its season at home as a four-touchdown favorite against UMass. The Scarlet Knights should own advantages in depth and physicality, making this largely a test of whether they can control a game they are expected to win comfortably.
UMass’ best path toward remaining competitive is avoiding the early turnover or special-teams mistake that allows Rutgers to build a two- or three-score lead before the game settles.
BetUS: Rutgers -29 | Total 52
MyBookie: Rutgers favored by roughly four touchdowns; verify current live number before wagering.
Akron at Wake Forest
Wake Forest opens at home with substantial expectations from the betting market. The Demon Deacons are favored by more than three touchdowns against Akron.
For Wake Forest, the important questions begin on offense. Week 1 games against overmatched opponents often provide an opportunity to establish tempo, determine the pecking order at skill positions and build confidence before conference play.
BetUS: Wake Forest -24.5 | Total 48.5
MyBookie: Wake Forest approximately -24.5; total around 48.

COLORADO AT GEORGIA TECH
Thursday, 8 p.m. ET โ Atlanta
This is easily Thursday night’s most compelling game and the first true Power Four measuring-stick contest of the weekend.
Georgia Tech defeated Colorado 27-20 in Boulder last season, and the rematch features two programs trying to establish themselves as more than middle-of-the-pack conference teams.
Colorado enters with quarterback Julian Lewis, one of the more intriguing young quarterbacks in the sport, while Georgia Tech counters with Alberto Mendoza. Both teams also underwent coordinator changes, adding another layer of uncertainty to an opening-week matchup with a relatively small point spread.
One of Colorado’s biggest concerns will be Georgia Tech’s running game. The Yellow Jackets can attack with a potentially dangerous combination of Malachi Hosley and Justice Haynes, forcing Colorado to prove it can hold up physically before worrying about explosive passing plays.
Georgia Tech’s challenge is different. Colorado has enough skill-position talent to punish mistakes in the secondary, and the Buffaloes have little incentive to turn this into a conservative road opener.
The betting market sees Georgia Tech as clearly better โ but not overwhelmingly better. A spread of less than a touchdown suggests Colorado has a legitimate opportunity to win outright if Lewis handles the road environment.
For both programs, this is the kind of game that changes the tone of September. Georgia Tech can establish itself as a serious ACC threat. Colorado can erase some offseason skepticism with a Power Four road victory.
BetUS: Georgia Tech -6.5 | Total 50.5
MyBookie: Georgia Tech -6.5 | Total approximately 50.5
Key matchup: Colorado’s defensive front against Georgia Tech’s running game.
UAB at Illinois
Illinois is nearly a four-touchdown favorite against UAB.
The Illini should possess significant advantages up front, and anything close in the fourth quarter would qualify as a major surprise. UAB’s challenge is extending drives, shortening the game and forcing Illinois to execute rather than handing the home team short fields.
BetUS: Illinois -27.5 | Total 55
MyBookie: Illinois around -28; check current total.
ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF AT NO. 25 MISSOURI
Thursday, 8 p.m. ET โ Columbia, Missouri
Missouri begins 2026 occupying the final position in the AP Top 25, which gives the Tigers something they did not always carry into season openers in previous eras: expectations.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff represents an FCS opponent Missouri should overwhelm. The more important evaluation will center on how quickly the Tigers look like a ranked team.
Missouri enters a crowded SEC in which even a good team can disappear rapidly after a couple of conference losses. Games like this therefore serve as opportunities to clean up the offense, establish rotations and get inexperienced players meaningful snaps before the schedule becomes far less forgiving.
The market leaves little doubt about the expected result. Consensus numbers have Missouri favored by more than 50 points.
For Missouri, style points do not matter nearly as much as avoiding injuries and getting the primary offense functioning efficiently. A sluggish first quarter would not ruin the season, but a crisp performance would validate the preseason Top 25 placement.
BetUS: FCS matchup; full-game market not consistently surfaced on the primary board
MyBookie: Market may be limited; verify FCS board before wagering.

IDAHO AT NO. 21 UTAH
Thursday, 9 p.m. ET โ Salt Lake City
Utah’s first game as the No. 21 team in the country comes against Idaho, an FCS program the Utes should physically dominate.
The more interesting question concerns what Utah looks like after another offseason of change. The Utes enter the year as one of the more respected challengers behind heavily favored Texas Tech in the Big 12 market.
Utah has built its identity around toughness, defense and line play, making this an opportunity to establish those characteristics immediately.
Because the opponent comes from the FCS, the scoreboard is almost secondary. Utah needs to emerge healthy, control the trenches and give its offense enough possessions to develop rhythm before facing more consequential competition.
BetUS: FCS matchup; primary full-game line not consistently surfaced
MyBookie: Check FCS board for current spread and total.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4
San Jose State at Eastern Michigan
This is one of the more evenly priced games of the entire weekend.
Eastern Michigan is a small home favorite, meaning oddsmakers essentially see a one-possession game. That makes it an appealing Friday alternative to the larger point spreads surrounding the ranked teams.
BetUS: Eastern Michigan -3 | Total 56
MyBookie: Eastern Michigan approximately -3 | Total in the mid-50s
Toledo at Michigan State
Michigan State cannot treat Toledo like a ceremonial opener.
The Rockets enter the season among the favorites in the MAC, while Michigan State is still attempting to climb back toward relevance in a brutally competitive Big Ten.
A single-digit-to-10-point spread reflects that difference. Michigan State has more raw talent, but Toledo has enough experience to punish sloppy offensive possessions.
BetUS: Michigan State -9 | Total 46.5
MyBookie: Michigan State approximately -9.5 | Total in the upper 40s
UTEP AT NO. 10 OKLAHOMA
Friday, 8 p.m. ET โ Norman
Oklahoma begins its season ranked No. 10 and carrying much larger ambitions than simply surviving another SEC schedule.
The Sooners enter Week 1 as a fringe national-title contender in the betting market, with BetUS pricing Oklahoma around +2800 to win the championship.
That makes the UTEP game less about whether Oklahoma wins and more about whether the Sooners look capable of justifying those expectations.
Oklahoma is favored by more than 40 points. At that number, the game should provide opportunities to evaluate quarterback play, offensive-line cohesion and the defensive depth necessary to survive a full SEC season.
For UTEP, hanging around requires avoiding catastrophic mistakes. Giving Oklahoma short fields could turn a difficult game into a blowout almost immediately.
BetUS: Oklahoma -41.5 | Total 51.5
MyBookie: Oklahoma roughly -41 | Total around 51
Season context: BetUS lists Oklahoma among the second tier of SEC championship contenders behind Georgia and Texas.

NO. 7 MIAMI AT STANFORD
Friday, 9 p.m. ET โ Palo Alto
Miami opens 2026 carrying genuine national championship expectations.
The Hurricanes are ranked No. 7, sit as the clear preseason betting favorite in the ACC and are priced at roughly +1000 by BetUS to win the national championship.
Stanford provides an unusual opening challenge because the Cardinal have already played. Stanford opened its season with a Week 0 victory over Hawaii, giving the Cardinal live-game experience before hosting one of the country’s most talented teams.
Miami remains a massive favorite, and that says plenty about how oddsmakers view the difference in roster quality.
The Hurricanes’ challenge will be avoiding the kind of sluggish road start that keeps a huge underdog interested. A long cross-country trip followed by an opponent with a game already under its belt creates at least some potential discomfort.
Miami’s roster should eventually overwhelm Stanford if the Hurricanes protect the football. But because Miami is being discussed as a playoff and championship contender, the standard is higher than simply escaping California with a victory.
Stanford, meanwhile, has very little pressure. The Cardinal can take chances, attack aggressively and attempt to make Miami uncomfortable.
BetUS: Miami -24.5 | Total 48
MyBookie: Miami -24.5 | Total 47.5
Key storyline: Can Miami immediately look like the dominant ACC favorite oddsmakers expect?
FRESNO STATE AT NO. 14 USC
Friday, 9 p.m. ET โ Los Angeles
USC enters Week 1 ranked No. 14 after already getting its season underway with a victory during Week 0.
That previous game matters because USC should arrive with fewer opening-night procedural issues than Fresno State.
The Trojans remain one of the more talented teams in the Big Ten and sit around +3300 on BetUS’ national championship board. That places USC outside the first tier of favorites but close enough that an impressive September could dramatically change its price.
Fresno State is a dangerous opponent precisely because the Bulldogs are accustomed to games against high-profile programs. USC should have far more skill-position speed, but Fresno State’s goal will be to prevent the Trojans from turning explosive plays into a runaway game.
A 22-point spread makes USC a substantial favorite without putting the game into the 35- or 40-point mismatch category.
BetUS: USC -22 | Total 52
MyBookie: USC approximately -22 to -23 | Total around 52
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5
OREGON STATE AT NO. 23 HOUSTON
Saturday, noon ET โ Houston
Houston enters its opener ranked No. 23 and with something unusual attached to that ranking: expectations.
The Cougars are not merely being treated as an interesting Big 12 outsider. BetUS lists Houston among the next group of challengers behind overwhelming conference favorite Texas Tech, and the sportsbook sets Houston’s regular-season win total at 8.5.
That makes Oregon State a useful opening test.
The new-look Pac-12 Beavers come into Houston as roughly three-touchdown underdogs, but this is still an FBS opponent with enough talent to expose mistakes.
Houston’s task is proving that its preseason ranking is more than projection. The Cougars should control the line of scrimmage and possess the better overall roster, but they cannot afford to let Oregon State remain within a possession into the second half.
BetUS: Houston -20.5 | Total 49.5
MyBookie: Houston -20.5 | Total 49.5
EAST CAROLINA AT NO. 13 ALABAMA
Saturday, noon ET โ Tuscaloosa
Alabama being ranked No. 13 feels unusual by the standards the Crimson Tide established over the past two decades.
That makes this opener more interesting than the point spread implies.
Alabama is still viewed as a legitimate SEC and national championship contender. BetUS has the Crimson Tide around +2200 to win the national title and +900 to capture the SEC.
East Carolina is also not a throwaway opponent. BetUS places the Pirates’ season win total at 7.5, suggesting ECU could be a competitive team in the American.
That does not erase the enormous talent gap, but it means Alabama faces an opponent capable of punishing poor execution.
The biggest issue for the Crimson Tide is establishing an identity. Alabama’s best teams historically overwhelmed opponents physically before allowing superior athletes to decide the game. Week 1 will offer an early indication of whether this roster can do the same.
East Carolina’s goal should be simple: survive the opening quarter, avoid turnovers and make Alabama sustain drives.
BetUS: Alabama -28 | Total 52.5
MyBookie: Alabama -28 | Total 52.5

NORTH TEXAS AT NO. 6 INDIANA
Saturday, noon ET โ Bloomington
Indiana enters 2026 in territory that would have seemed almost absurd several years ago: the Hoosiers are defending national champions and begin the new season ranked No. 6.
That changes everything.
Indiana is no longer the surprise team attempting to prove it belongs. Opponents now measure themselves against the Hoosiers, and anything less than dominance against a large underdog will invite scrutiny.
North Texas is receiving around 40 points, one of Saturday’s largest spreads.
The danger for Indiana is psychological more than tactical. Championship teams spend an entire offseason being celebrated, then must immediately rediscover the urgency that produced the title.
Indiana remains one of the leading national championship choices, priced around +850 by BetUS.
The Hoosiers should have the talent and depth to win comfortably. The more important question is whether they still display championship-level sharpness.
BetUS: Indiana -40 | Total 55.5
MyBookie: Indiana -40.5 | Total 55.5
Liberty at James Madison
Two programs with conference-title aspirations meet in Harrisonburg.
James Madison is the Sun Belt favorite on many preseason boards, while Liberty remains one of Conference USA’s strongest programs. This has the potential to matter when the playoff committee begins comparing the best teams outside the Power Four.
BetUS: James Madison -7 | Total 50
MyBookie: James Madison -7 | Total 51
Ohio at Nebraska
Nebraska gets an experienced MAC opponent rather than an FCS warmup.
The Cornhuskers are favored by more than three touchdowns and should control the trenches, but Ohio’s experience makes this a better early test than the spread suggests.
BetUS: Nebraska -23.5 | Total 46.5
MyBookie: Nebraska -23.5 | Total 46.5

Coastal Carolina at West Virginia
West Virginia is favored by approximately three touchdowns at home.
The Mountaineers should be able to dictate the game physically, while Coastal Carolina’s best chance is creating explosive plays and forcing West Virginia into a higher-possession contest.
BetUS: West Virginia -21 | Total 56
MyBookie: West Virginia -21.5 | Total 56
BALL STATE AT NO. 1 OHIO STATE
Saturday, 12:30 p.m. ET โ Columbus
Ohio State opens the season exactly where it expects to be: No. 1 in the country and the betting favorite to win another national championship.
BetUS lists the Buckeyes at approximately +550 for the title and +180 to win the Big Ten.
Ball State is unlikely to challenge Ohio State for four quarters. The Buckeyes are favored by approximately 50 points, which turns this into an evaluation of execution rather than survival.
How quickly does Ohio State establish control? Will the offense operate efficiently? How many young players earn meaningful second-half snaps?
Those are the questions that matter.
For national championship favorites, Week 1 is often less about defeating an inferior opponent than showing that the roster has championship depth from the opening whistle.
BetUS: Ohio State -50 | Total 56
MyBookie: Ohio State -50.5 | Total 56.5
Miami (Ohio) at Pittsburgh
Pitt opens as a comfortable favorite against one of the MAC’s preseason title favorites.
Miami is good enough that Pittsburgh cannot sleepwalk through the first half, but the Panthers should possess clear advantages in speed and depth.
BetUS: Pittsburgh -16.5 | Total 48
MyBookie: Pittsburgh -16.5 | Total approximately 48.5
Kent State at South Carolina
South Carolina is favored by more than five touchdowns.
The Gamecocks enter the year with outside playoff aspirations and should have an opportunity to develop offensive rhythm before SEC play becomes the weekly focus.
BetUS: South Carolina -36 | Total 54
MyBookie: South Carolina -35.5 to -36 | Total 54
TENNESSEE STATE AT NO. 3 GEORGIA
Saturday, 3 p.m. ET โ Athens
Georgia begins 2026 ranked No. 3 and once again squarely in the national championship conversation.
BetUS gives the Bulldogs roughly +800 title odds and makes Georgia one of the two primary favorites to win the SEC alongside Texas.
Tennessee State is an FCS opponent and should not threaten Georgia if the Bulldogs execute normally.
That makes this game about roster evaluation.
Georgia’s championship hopes depend on maintaining the relentless depth that has defined Kirby Smart’s best teams. The opener should provide an early look at the offensive rotation, emerging defensive playmakers and younger players who could become significant contributors by November.
The primary objective is simple: establish control immediately and get essential starters off the field.
BetUS: Full FCS market not consistently shown on primary board; consensus Georgia spread near the upper 40s
MyBookie: FCS market availability varies; check live board.

BAYLOR VS. AUBURN
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET โ Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta
This might be the most intriguing non-ranked Power Four matchup of Week 1.
Baylor arrives with former Florida quarterback DJ Lagway, a player with enough natural ability to dramatically alter the Bears’ offensive ceiling.
Auburn has undergone even larger changes.
New coach Alex Golesh brought several former South Florida players with him, most notably dynamic quarterback Byrum Brown. Brown’s ability as both a passer and runner gives Auburn an offensive dimension that could create serious problems for Baylor.
That quarterback matchup alone makes the game worth watching.
There are larger implications as well.
Auburn has been stuck in mediocrity for too long by the program’s historical standards. Golesh can immediately generate momentum with a Power Four victory on a national stage.
Baylor enters with similar pressure. The Bears are not considered a primary Big 12 favorite, but Lagway gives them enough upside that a victory over Auburn would dramatically improve the perception of their ceiling.
Oddsmakers favor Auburn by a touchdown, but the total approaching 60 points indicates expectations of significant offense.
This is exactly the kind of Week 1 game that can produce overreaction โ but it can also reveal legitimate truths.
BetUS: Auburn -7.5 | Total 58.5
MyBookie: Auburn -7.5 | Total 59
Key matchup: DJ Lagway against Auburn’s rebuilt defense, and Byrum Brown’s mobility against Baylor.
BOISE STATE AT NO. 2 OREGON
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET โ Eugene
The 24-point spread makes this look like a mismatch.
The names involved make it anything but forgettable.
Boise State enters 2026 as perhaps the most credible preseason candidate to emerge as the top team outside the Power Four. The Broncos are BetUS’ favorite to win the rebuilt Pac-12.
Oregon is pursuing something entirely different: a national championship.
The Ducks begin No. 2 in the country behind quarterback Dante Moore, and BetUS prices Oregon around +700 to win the championship.
The matchup that could determine whether Boise State can make this interesting is Oregon’s passing attack against the Broncos’ secondary.
Boise State enters with questions on the back end. Moore and Oregon’s collection of receivers are precisely the wrong opponent against which to hide weaknesses there.
The Broncos’ objective will be shortening the game, generating pressure and avoiding the explosive plays that allow Autzen Stadium to turn chaotic.
A competitive Boise State loss would not destroy the Broncos’ postseason hopes. An outright upset, however, would immediately give Boise State one of the best rรฉsumรฉs in the country.
Oregon has far more to lose. A national championship contender cannot afford to stumble at home in Week 1.
BetUS: Oregon -24.5 | Total 51.5
MyBookie: Oregon -24.5 | Total 51.5
Key matchup: Dante Moore and Oregon’s receivers against Boise State’s secondary.
TEXAS STATE AT NO. 5 TEXAS
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET โ Austin
Texas State enters its new Pac-12 era with an assignment that could hardly be more difficult.
Texas begins ranked No. 5 and is one of the principal favorites to win both the SEC and the national championship.
BetUS prices the Longhorns around +650 to win the national title and +320 to capture the SEC.
Texas State is not being viewed as an ordinary lower-tier FBS opponent, either. The Bobcats are among the leading contenders in the revamped Pac-12. But the talent gap in Austin remains enormous.
Texas’ focus should be establishing offensive continuity and avoiding the self-inflicted mistakes that can keep a 30-point underdog alive.
For Texas State, this is essentially a free opportunity. A competitive performance generates national credibility; a loss does little damage to the Bobcats’ conference ambitions.
BetUS: Texas -29.5 | Total 60
MyBookie: Texas -30.5 | Total 59.5
The one-point difference in the spread is another reason line-shopping matters.
MARSHALL AT NO. 18 PENN STATE
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET โ State College
Penn State enters 2026 in a peculiar position.
The Nittany Lions are ranked No. 18 and remain talented enough to reach the playoff, but BetUS lists them well behind Ohio State, Oregon and Indiana in the Big Ten championship market.
That makes every opportunity to establish credibility important.
Marshall should be overmatched, particularly across the lines, but the Thundering Herd are capable enough that Penn State cannot treat the opener as a scrimmage.
The Nittany Lions are favored by roughly 24 points. A convincing win would not change the national picture, but offensive struggles would revive questions about Penn State’s ceiling.
BetUS: Penn State -24 | Total 52
MyBookie: Penn State approximately -24 | Total low 50s
FURMAN AT NO. 20 TENNESSEE
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET โ Knoxville
Tennessee opens ranked No. 20 but remains considerably more respected by the futures market than that ranking may suggest.
BetUS prices the Volunteers around +6000 to win the national championship and +1800 to capture the SEC.
Furman should not threaten Tennessee physically. The Volunteers are roughly seven-touchdown favorites on consensus boards.
The objective is therefore offensive precision and defensive discipline.
Tennessee has enough talent to climb rapidly in the polls, but the SEC schedule provides little margin for error. The opener offers a chance to work through mistakes without paying a conference price for them.
BetUS: FCS matchup; consensus spread roughly Tennessee -48
MyBookie: Check current FCS board.
BOSTON COLLEGE AT CINCINNATI
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET โ Cincinnati
This Power Four matchup does not have playoff implications attached to it, but it may provide valuable information about two programs trying to climb.
Cincinnati is favored by a little more than a touchdown at Nippert Stadium.
The Bearcats are picked well behind the leaders in a Big 12 dominated by preseason favorite Texas Tech. Boston College faces an even steeper projection in the ACC.
That makes this game unusually important for bowl positioning and early momentum.
BetUS has Boston College’s season win total at only 3.5 and Cincinnati’s at 5.5. Those numbers explain why a nonconference win carries real value for both sides.
Cincinnati should benefit from home field, but Boston College can make the game uncomfortable if it prevents explosive plays and turns the contest into a physical, low-possession struggle.
BetUS: Cincinnati -7.5 | Total 49.5
MyBookie: Cincinnati -7.5 | Total 49.5

Tulane at Duke
Tulane remains one of the better programs outside the Power Four and gets a genuine measuring-stick opportunity at Duke.
The Blue Devils are favored by just over a touchdown. Tulane’s ability to keep this game close โ or win it โ could become important later if the Green Wave enter the conversation for the best non-Power Four postseason rรฉsumรฉ.
BetUS: Duke -7.5 | Total 51
MyBookie: Duke -7.5 | Total 51
Oklahoma State at Tulsa
Oklahoma State travels across the state as a two-touchdown favorite.
Tulsa has the opportunity to produce an immediate statement under the lights, while Oklahoma State cannot afford to surrender a nonconference game if it hopes to move back toward the top half of the Big 12.
BetUS: Oklahoma State -13.5 | Total 58.5
MyBookie: Oklahoma State approximately -13.5 | Total upper 50s
NORTHERN ILLINOIS AT NO. 22 IOWA
Saturday, 4:15 p.m. ET โ Iowa City
If you like high totals and frantic offense, this probably is not your game.
Iowa is a 31.5-point favorite while the total sits at only 44.5, an unusual combination that effectively forecasts domination by the Hawkeyes without expecting a massive scoring explosion.
That is very Iowa.
The Hawkeyes begin ranked No. 22 and remain a long shot in a top-heavy Big Ten. The program’s path toward exceeding expectations once again begins with defense, field position and avoiding offensive mistakes.
Northern Illinois needs turnovers or special-teams opportunities to alter the expected script.
If Iowa gets to play the game entirely on its terms, the Huskies could spend most of the afternoon dealing with long fields and an increasingly difficult scoreboard.
BetUS: Iowa -31.5 | Total 44.5
MyBookie: Iowa -31.5 | Total 44.5
Wyoming at Colorado State
The Border War gives Saturday one of its smallest point spreads.
Colorado State is favored by only a field goal at home, making this one of the better options for viewers searching for a game likely to remain competitive into the fourth quarter.
BetUS: Colorado State -3 | Total 46
MyBookie: Colorado State approximately -3 | Total mid-40s
MISSOURI STATE AT NO. 8 TEXAS A&M
Saturday, 7 p.m. ET โ College Station
Texas A&M begins 2026 ranked No. 8 and facing the same question that seems to follow the Aggies every August: is this finally the year talent translates into elite results?
The betting market takes the possibility seriously.
BetUS lists Texas A&M around +2500 to win the national championship and +1000 to win the SEC.
Missouri State enters as an FBS opponent following its move into Conference USA, but the Bears are still receiving around 40 points at Kyle Field.
That spread demonstrates the difference between simply being an FBS program and possessing an SEC championship-caliber roster.
Texas A&M needs more than a victory. The Aggies should demonstrate that their offense can consistently finish drives and that the defense possesses enough depth to survive the SEC grind.
BetUS: Texas A&M -40 | Total 53.5
MyBookie: Texas A&M -40.5 | Total 53
ABILENE CHRISTIAN AT NO. 12 TEXAS TECH
Saturday, 7 p.m. ET โ Lubbock
Few programs enter 2026 with a larger gap between traditional expectations and current betting expectations than Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders begin ranked No. 12 but are the overwhelming betting favorite to win the Big 12.
BetUS currently makes Texas Tech approximately -115 to capture a 16-team conference โ an extraordinarily short preseason price โ and roughly +2200 to win the national championship.
That tells you how highly oddsmakers regard the roster.
Abilene Christian is unlikely to provide a four-quarter challenge, but the opener allows Texas Tech to show whether its aggressively constructed roster already functions like a championship unit.
When a team enters the season as an odds-on conference favorite, merely being good is no longer enough.
The Red Raiders now have expectations.
BetUS: FCS matchup; consensus Texas Tech roughly -42
MyBookie: FCS market availability varies.
Sam Houston at Troy
Troy enters as a substantial home favorite against Sam Houston.
The Trojans are among the better-positioned Sun Belt programs entering the year, while Sam Houston has significant work to do after recent roster and program changes.
BetUS: Troy -16.5 | Total 54
MyBookie: Troy -17 | Total 53.5
Arkansas State at Memphis
Memphis is favored by double digits in another matchup that could matter within the broader non-Power Four landscape.
Arkansas State is a legitimate Sun Belt contender, while Memphis enters among the favorites in the American.
BetUS: Memphis -11.5 | Total 52
MyBookie: Memphis around -11.5 | Total low 50s
FIU at South Florida
South Florida is favored by approximately two touchdowns against FIU.
USF enters as one of the American’s more interesting contenders and cannot afford an in-state stumble.
BetUS: South Florida -14 | Total 52
MyBookie: South Florida approximately -14 to -15 | Total low 50s
WESTERN MICHIGAN AT NO. 16 MICHIGAN
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET โ Ann Arbor
Michigan begins another season with national expectations, although the Wolverines sit behind Ohio State, Indiana and Oregon on most Big Ten futures boards.
They nevertheless remain a serious playoff contender.
BetUS prices Michigan around +4000 for the national championship and +1600 to win the Big Ten.
Western Michigan represents one of the stronger teams in the MAC market, meaning the Wolverines face a more credible opponent than a typical opening FCS matchup.
Michigan is still favored by nearly four touchdowns.
The game should reveal whether the Wolverines can generate enough explosive offense to complement the physical identity expected from the defense and running game.
BetUS: Michigan -27.5 | Total 48.5
MyBookie: Michigan approximately -27.5 | Total around 48.5

CLEMSON AT NO. 11 LSU
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET โ Baton Rouge
This is Saturday night’s headliner.
The matchup already contains enough storylines for an entire weekend.
LSU begins the Lane Kiffin era at Tiger Stadium, and expectations surrounding the new coach are substantial. Kiffin rebuilt portions of LSU’s roster through aggressive offseason additions and will turn the offense over to quarterback Sam Leavitt.
Clemson arrives attempting to recover from a disappointing 7-6 season.
Dabo Swinney has named fourth-year junior Christopher Vizzina the starting quarterback. Vizzina has appeared in 14 games but has made only one previous start, throwing for 317 yards and three touchdowns against SMU.
Freshman Tait Reynolds is also expected to be part of Clemson’s quarterback plans.
That creates one of the clearest matchup questions of the weekend: can Clemson’s relatively inexperienced quarterback situation function inside Tiger Stadium against a roster built to contend immediately?
There is also an extraordinary off-field subplot.
Swinney publicly criticized the possibility of LSU adding former college players who had participated in NFL camps before attempting to return to the college game. The eligibility battle has produced legal and conference-level controversy immediately before the opener.
All of it creates an unusually charged atmosphere for Week 1.
LSU is ranked No. 11 while Clemson begins outside the Top 25, and oddsmakers see a significant difference between them. LSU is favored by 10 points.
BetUS nevertheless gives both programs meaningful championship odds: LSU approximately +1600 and Clemson roughly +10000.
Clemson can erase months of negative momentum with one victory. LSU can validate the enormous optimism surrounding the Kiffin era.
BetUS: LSU -10 | Total 50.5
MyBookie: LSU approximately -10 | Total around 50.5
Key matchup: Christopher Vizzina handling LSU’s pressure and the Tiger Stadium environment.
Biggest storyline: Lane Kiffin’s LSU debut amid one of college football’s strangest offseason eligibility disputes.
Louisiana-Monroe at Mississippi State
Mississippi State is favored by nearly four touchdowns.
The Bulldogs should control the game physically and use the opener to establish offensive rhythm before the SEC portion of the schedule.
BetUS: Mississippi State -28.5 | Total 55
MyBookie: Mississippi State -28.5 | Total approximately 55.5
Florida Atlantic at Florida
Florida opens as a large favorite against an in-state FBS opponent.
The Gators enter with significantly larger goals than this game, but FAU gets the kind of opportunity that can define a season for a Group of Six program.
BetUS: Florida -26.5 | Total 59.5
MyBookie: Florida -26.5 | Total approximately 59
UTAH TECH AT NO. 14 BYU
Saturday, 8 p.m. ET โ Provo
BYU begins the season ranked No. 14 and positioned as Texas Tech’s most prominent Big 12 challenger in several betting markets.
BetUS lists the Cougars around +550 to win the conference and +8000 to capture the national championship.
Utah Tech comes from the FCS, so an upset would rank among the largest in recent college football history.
The meaningful questions revolve around BYU itself.
Can the Cougars look like a legitimate top-15 team immediately? Or the offense create enough explosive plays? Can BYU establish enough depth to withstand an entire Big 12 season?
The starters should not need four quarters to decide the result.
BetUS: Consensus market approximately BYU -47
MyBookie: FCS board; check current availability.
Central Michigan at New Mexico
New Mexico is a double-digit favorite against Central Michigan in a late Mountain West-MAC matchup.
The Lobos have legitimate Mountain West aspirations and cannot afford to give away a home game against an opponent oddsmakers believe they should handle.
BetUS: New Mexico -10 | Total 46.5
MyBookie: New Mexico -10 | Total 46.5
UNLV at Hawaii
UNLV is only a three-point road favorite in Honolulu.
Travel, the late kickoff and Hawaii’s home-field familiarity make this one of Saturday night’s more competitive games.
BetUS: UNLV -3 | Total 56.5
MyBookie: UNLV -3 | Total 56.5
UCLA AT CALIFORNIA
Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET โ Berkeley
Old Pac-12 rivals meet again, only now UCLA represents the Big Ten while California remains in the ACC.
Conference realignment has made the labels strange. The rivalry itself is familiar.
More importantly, oddsmakers see essentially no separation between the teams.
UCLA is favored by only two points.
Neither program enters 2026 among its conference favorites. BetUS lists UCLA at +15000 to win the Big Ten and Cal around +4000 to win the ACC.
That makes this game much more significant for the programs involved than it may appear nationally.
A Power Four nonconference win provides a useful foundation for bowl eligibility. A loss immediately increases the pressure of reaching six wins through conference play.
With such a small spread, turnovers and quarterback play should matter more than any perceived roster gap.
BetUS: UCLA -2 | Total 53.5
MyBookie: UCLA -2 | Total 53.5
Key matchup: Whichever offensive line handles obvious passing downs better could decide a near-pick’em game.
Western Kentucky at Nevada
One of the final games Saturday night is also one of the closest on the board.
Western Kentucky is favored by just 2.5 points on the road.
BetUS: Western Kentucky -2.5 | Total 52.5
MyBookie: Western Kentucky -2.5 | Total 52.5

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6
WASHINGTON STATE AT NO. 17 WASHINGTON
Sunday, 4 p.m. ET โ Seattle
The Apple Cup does not need conference affiliation to create emotion.
Washington State and Washington continue their rivalry despite realignment placing the programs on dramatically different paths.
Washington enters ranked No. 17 and is favored by more than three touchdowns.
The Huskies remain a dark-horse Big Ten contender, priced around +2500 by BetUS to win the conference and +10000 for the national championship.
Washington State, meanwhile, begins life in the reconstructed Pac-12 and is expected to compete in the league, though Boise State enters as the clear preseason favorite.
The 23-point spread suggests the talent gap has widened.
Rivalry games, however, frequently resist clean handicapping.
Washington State’s path toward an upset involves forcing turnovers, keeping the game within one possession into the second half and allowing rivalry pressure to migrate toward the favored Huskies.
Washington can prevent that by establishing physical control immediately.
BetUS: Washington -23 | Total 50.5
MyBookie: Washington -23.5 | Total 51
WISCONSIN VS. NO. 4 NOTRE DAME
Sunday, 7:30 p.m. ET โ Lambeau Field, Green Bay
For Notre Dame, this is the beginning of what the Irish hope becomes a national championship run.
For Wisconsin, it could help determine the trajectory of Luke Fickell’s tenure.
Notre Dame enters ranked No. 4 and is the second choice on BetUS’ national championship board at approximately +600.
Quarterback CJ Carr returns to lead an Irish offense backed by a defense expected to rank among the nation’s best.
Wisconsin is operating under dramatically different circumstances.
Fickell has gone 17-21 during his tenure and enters the season under considerable pressure. The Badgers responded with an extensive roster overhaul, including the addition of former Old Dominion quarterback Colton Joseph.
Joseph brings a true dual-threat element after producing more than 2,500 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards last season.
That mobility could be Wisconsin’s best weapon against an elite Notre Dame defense.
The problem is everywhere else.
Notre Dame should have superior depth, more proven high-end talent and considerably greater margin for error.
The neutral-site designation is also somewhat misleading. Lambeau Field should provide Wisconsin with substantial crowd support, creating an atmosphere far different from a conventional neutral-field bowl game.
Oddsmakers still make Notre Dame nearly a three-touchdown favorite.
For Wisconsin, merely being competitive deep into the game could provide optimism. For Notre Dame, anything less than a convincing victory will generate questions about whether the Irish deserve their lofty preseason standing.
BetUS: Notre Dame -20.5 | Total 47.5
MyBookie: Notre Dame approximately -20.5 | Total around 47
Key matchup: Colton Joseph’s mobility against Notre Dame’s defense.
Pressure meter: Extremely high for Wisconsin and Luke Fickell.
NO. 24 LOUISVILLE VS. NO. 9 OLE MISS
Sunday, 7:30 p.m. ET โ Nissan Stadium, Nashville
The only AP Top 25-vs.-Top 25 matchup of the week arrives Sunday night.
And unlike many opening-week showcases, the result could matter substantially in December.
Ole Miss begins ranked No. 9 after establishing itself as a legitimate playoff program. Louisville enters No. 24 but is widely viewed as one of Miami’s strongest challengers in the ACC.
Both teams possess conference-title ambitions.
The game also features two of the nation’s most dangerous running backs: Louisville’s Isaac Brown and Ole Miss’ Kewan Lacy.
At quarterback, Ole Miss returns Trinidad Chambliss, who enters the year with legitimate national recognition and an opportunity to push himself into the early Heisman Trophy conversation.
Louisville counters with Ohio State transfer Lincoln Kienholz, whose ability to elevate the passing game may determine whether the Cardinals can challenge for the ACC championship.
The Battle of X’s and O’s
The coaching matchup is equally compelling.
Jeff Brohm has consistently demonstrated an ability to create offense and attack specific defensive weaknesses. Ole Miss, meanwhile, enters with enough firepower to force Louisville into uncomfortable scoring territory if the Cardinals fall behind.
Because this is a neutral-site game in Nashville, neither side has the usual opening-night home advantage.
The betting line is also small enough to treat the upset seriously. Ole Miss is favored by a touchdown.
BetUS lists Ole Miss around +3000 for the national championship. Louisville is further down the board but remains approximately +800 to win the ACC.
For the winner, this becomes an immediate rรฉsumรฉ piece.
For the loser, the playoff dream remains alive โ but the margin for error shrinks before conference play even gets underway.
BetUS: Ole Miss -7 | Total 55.5
MyBookie: Ole Miss approximately -7 | Total around 55.5
Key matchup: Louisville’s defense against Trinidad Chambliss and the Ole Miss offense.
Players to watch: Isaac Brown, Kewan Lacy, Trinidad Chambliss and Lincoln Kienholz.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7
NO. 19 SMU AT FLORIDA STATE
Monday, 7:30 p.m. ET โ Tallahassee
Labor Day weekend ends with one of its most consequential games.
Unlike most Week 1 showcases, this one counts in the conference standings.
No. 19 SMU travels to Florida State for an ACC game that could become extremely important when teams start sorting through conference-championship tiebreakers in November.
Florida State already has a game under its belt.
The Seminoles opened the season with a 34-17 Week 0 victory over New Mexico State, but the performance left concerns โ particularly defensively.
That makes SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings one of the most important players to watch Monday night.
If Florida State cannot tighten its secondary and improve at the line of scrimmage, Jennings has enough talent to turn the game into an offensive problem for the Seminoles.
Florida State counters with plenty of skill talent, including receiver Duce Robinson and running back Ousmane Kromah.
SMU’s defense underwent significant offseason reconstruction, meaning Florida State should have opportunities if it can protect the quarterback and avoid negative plays.
The betting market delivers perhaps the strongest statement of all.
SMU is ranked, playing on the road โ and favored.
BetUS lists the Mustangs at approximately +650 to win the ACC, behind Miami but firmly among the next group of contenders. Florida State sits around +4500.
A Seminoles victory would immediately alter those expectations.
An SMU victory would reinforce the idea that the Mustangs belong near the top of the ACC race.
BetUS: SMU -3 | Total 53.5
MyBookie: SMU approximately -3 | Total around 53
Key matchup: Kevin Jennings against Florida State’s secondary.
Why it matters: This isn’t simply a high-profile opener. It is an ACC conference game.
FIVE GAMES YOU SHOULD NOT MISS
If you are choosing only a handful of games, Clemson-LSU belongs at the top. Lane Kiffin makes his LSU debut, Clemson breaks in Christopher Vizzina at quarterback and the unusual player-eligibility controversy adds another layer to an already fascinating matchup.
Louisville-Ole Miss is the weekend’s only ranked-vs.-ranked game and could eventually influence how the playoff committee evaluates both conferences.
SMU-Florida State carries immediate ACC consequences and features a ranked road team favored inside Doak Campbell Stadium.
Boise State-Oregon provides the best Group-of-Six program in the preseason discussion an immediate opportunity against the nation’s No. 2 team.
And Wisconsin-Notre Dame at Lambeau Field combines one program chasing a national championship with another entering a potentially defining season for its head coach.
Baylor-Auburn and Colorado-Georgia Tech should not be ignored, either. Both feature Power Four opponents, manageable point spreads and quarterback storylines capable of producing entertaining football.
WEEK 1 BETTING BOARD TAKEAWAYS
One thing jumps out when comparing BetUS and MyBookie: line shopping matters even in Week 1.
Texas, for example, has appeared at -29.5 at BetUS while MyBookie has shown -30.5 against Texas State. Washington has appeared -23 at BetUS and -23.5 at MyBookie.
Those differences appear small until a game lands directly on or around a key number.
The books agree much more closely on several of the marquee games. Oregon is approximately -24.5 against Boise State, Notre Dame is around -20.5 against Wisconsin, LSU is around -10 against Clemson, Ole Miss is around -7 against Louisville and SMU is around -3 at Florida State.
That creates a fascinating opening weekend.
There may not be a slate filled with top-five showdowns, but there are plenty of opportunities for the preseason narrative to change.
By Monday night, some playoff contenders will look every bit as strong as advertised.
Others will already be explaining what went wrong.
