49ers Rout Rams 27-7 in Historic NFL Melbourne Game

MELBOURNE, Australia — The San Francisco 49ers turned the NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia into a decisive statement Thursday night, defeating the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 before 100,021 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Brock Purdy threw three touchdown passes, San Francisco rushed for 174 yards and the 49ers’ defense held one of the NFL’s most highly regarded offenses scoreless over the final three quarters.

The Rams briefly held a 7-3 lead after Kyren Williams scored the first NFL regular-season touchdown on Australian soil. San Francisco answered with 24 consecutive points and controlled nearly every meaningful moment thereafter.

The attendance ranked as the seventh-largest for a regular-season game in NFL history, adding an imposing backdrop to the league’s long-awaited Australian debut. The game was played Friday morning in Melbourne and Thursday night in the United States.

Purdy recovers from early interception

Purdy completed 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He overcame a first-half mistake and repeatedly extended drives with timely throws and scrambles.

Los Angeles safety Quentin Lake intercepted Purdy early, but the Rams failed to turn the takeaway into lasting control.

After Williams’ five-yard touchdown run gave Los Angeles a four-point advantage, Purdy responded by finding former Rams receiver Demarcus Robinson for a 39-yard touchdown. The score sent San Francisco into halftime leading 10-7.

Purdy widened the margin in the third quarter with a two-yard touchdown pass to Mike Evans, who caught six passes during an impressive 49ers debut.

San Francisco then delivered the sequence that effectively decided the game.

Goal-line stand changes the game

Trailing 17-7 late in the third quarter, Los Angeles drove to the San Francisco 1-yard line. Rams coach Sean McVay passed up a short field-goal attempt and called a quarterback sneak for Matthew Stafford on fourth down.

The 49ers stopped Stafford short of the goal line.

Rather than simply protecting their lead, the 49ers responded with a 99-yard touchdown drive. Purdy escaped pressure and found Deebo Samuel for a 15-yard score, extending San Francisco’s advantage to 24-7.

The goal-line stand and subsequent touchdown drive produced a potential 14-point swing while demonstrating the difference between the teams. San Francisco made critical plays in short-yardage situations, while Los Angeles repeatedly failed to finish promising possessions.

Dre Greenlaw later stripped the ball from Rams tight end Tyler Higbee, setting up Eddy Piñeiro’s 56-yard field goal and completing the scoring.

San Francisco defense frustrates Stafford

Stafford completed 15 of 25 passes for 155 yards and did not throw a touchdown. He was replaced by Stetson Bennett for Los Angeles’ final possession after the outcome had been settled.

The Rams converted only two of nine third-down opportunities and finished one of three on fourth down. Puka Nacua and Davante Adams combined for eight receptions and 100 yards, but Los Angeles struggled to produce explosive plays or sustain drives.

San Francisco’s defense, coordinated by former Rams assistant Raheem Morris, held Los Angeles to 290 total yards. The performance was especially notable because the Rams entered the season with significant expectations following a productive 2025 campaign.

Christian McCaffrey accumulated 88 yards from scrimmage, helping the 49ers establish balance and wear down the Los Angeles defense. Purdy, Samuel and Kaelon Black also contributed runs of at least 12 yards as San Francisco controlled the line of scrimmage.

Myles Garrett quiet in Rams debut

Myles Garrett’s first appearance for Los Angeles produced none of the disruption the Rams expected from their marquee defensive addition. Garrett finished without a tackle, sack or quarterback hit and spent portions of the second half on the sideline.

The Rams’ defense generated an early interception but could not consistently pressure Purdy or prevent San Francisco from controlling possession. The 49ers’ 174 rushing yards became increasingly damaging as the game progressed.

Los Angeles was also without Aaron Donald, whose anticipated return will have to wait after he did not travel to Australia.

Travel plans draw scrutiny

The teams took dramatically different approaches to preparing for the international opener.

San Francisco arrived in Australia approximately a week before the game, giving its players time to adjust to the considerable time-zone change. Los Angeles arrived only about 28 hours before kickoff.

McVay declined to blame the defeat on travel, saying his team had simply failed to perform well enough. Nevertheless, the contrast was difficult to ignore as the 49ers appeared sharper and more energetic during the second half.

San Francisco also spent its extended stay participating in local events and connecting with Australian fans. By kickoff, significant portions of the Melbourne Cricket Ground appeared to favor the 49ers despite Los Angeles serving as the designated home team.

Injury concern for 49ers rookie

The victory carried one concerning development for San Francisco. Rookie receiver De’Zhaun Stribling left the game with an ankle injury and was unable to put his full weight on the leg.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said afterward that Stribling’s Achilles tendon was intact, although the severity of the ankle injury remained uncertain. The rookie had been expected to carry a meaningful role after Ricky Pearsall suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Evans, Robinson and Samuel compensated for Stribling’s absence, combining for 14 receptions, 147 yards and all three of Purdy’s touchdown passes.

Melbourne delivers historic NFL atmosphere

Although the game became one-sided, Melbourne provided the spectacle the NFL wanted from its Australian debut.

Fans representing all 32 teams filled the MCG, producing an announced crowd of 100,021. The historic matchup began a multiyear agreement designed to bring additional NFL games to Melbourne.

The Associated Press reported that the attendance was the seventh-largest in league regular-season history. The enormous turnout offered compelling evidence that the NFL has a substantial audience in Australia.

For the 49ers, the long trip ended with a division victory and an encouraging opening performance. Purdy recovered from adversity, the running game supplied balance and the defense dominated the most important downs.

For the Rams, the journey home will include difficult questions about their travel strategy, offensive execution and inability to match San Francisco’s physicality.

The NFL’s first Australian regular-season game will be remembered as a landmark international event. On the field, however, it belonged entirely to the 49ers.
