College football returns Saturday, August 29, with an eight-game FBS Week 0 schedule that begins in Dublin, Ireland, and concludes under the lights in Las Vegas.

The opening Saturday features North Carolina seeking revenge against TCU. An early ACC showdown between NC State and Virginia, the long-awaited FBS debut of North Dakota State and a nationally televised Group of Six battle between Memphis and UNLV. No. 14 USC, the only ranked team playing Saturday, hosts San Jose State.

Below is Gamble Guy’s complete 2026 college football Week 0 preview, including kickoff times, television information, betting odds, key matchups, roster developments and betting leans for every FBS game scheduled for August 29.

Betting lines were checked August 26 and remain subject to change. MyBookie odds are identified where the sportsbook’s public board made them independently verifiable. Other games use current market-consensus lines. Check the sportsbook before placing a wager.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. TCU Horned Frogs

Kickoff: Noon ET
TV: ESPN
Location: Aviva Stadium, Dublin, Ireland
Current consensus odds: TCU -7.5; over/under 47.5
Moneyline: North Carolina approximately +260; TCU approximately -325
Projected score: TCU 27, North Carolina 17

The first FBS game of the 2026 college football season is also a rematch. TCU spoiled Bill Belichick’s college coaching debut in 2025, overwhelming North Carolina 48-14 in Chapel Hill. The Horned Frogs accumulated 542 yards and returned two turnovers for touchdowns.

North Carolina enters Belichick’s second season attempting to repair an offense that repeatedly put its defense in difficult positions. New offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino will work with quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., whose experience should give the Tar Heels more stability than they possessed during the 2025 opener.

TCU must replace Josh Hoover, who transferred to Indiana, with Harvard transfer Jaden Craig expected to direct the offense. Craig has talent, but Saturday will mark his first appearance against a Power Four defense. How he responds to Belichick’s disguised coverages and pressure packages could determine whether TCU covers the spread.

The Horned Frogs can reduce that pressure by leaning on running back Jeremy Payne. Establishing the run would create manageable third downs and prevent North Carolina from aggressively attacking Craig.

Will someone have jet lag?

The international setting adds uncertainty. This will be the first overseas game for both programs, with TCU serving as the designated home team. Recent Dublin openers have produced upsets, including Georgia Tech’s victory over Florida State in 2024. Travel, sleep schedules and special-teams mistakes can narrow the gap between teams in an unfamiliar environment.

Still, TCU appears to own the stronger overall roster. North Carolina must avoid the turnovers that destroyed its chances in last year’s meeting. If the Tar Heels protect the ball, they can make this competitive into the second half. If not, the Horned Frogs could separate again.

The current market lists TCU as a 7.5-point favorite with a total of 47.5. CBS Sports’ current Week 0 odds match those numbers.

Injury and availability note: Neither program had published a traditional NFL-style injury report as of Wednesday. Bettors should monitor travel-roster and pregame availability reports after both teams arrive in Ireland.

San Jose State Spartans at No. 14 USC Trojans

Kickoff: 3 p.m. ET
TV: NBC and Peacock
Location: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles
Current consensus odds: USC -38.5; over/under 60.5
Projected score: USC 45, San Jose State 13

USC opens Lincoln Riley’s fifth season with the largest point spread on Saturday’s schedule.

Quarterback Jayden Maiava returns after leading the Big Ten with 3,431 regular-season passing yards in 2025. He completed 66.2 percent of his passes and produced 23 touchdowns against eight interceptions. USC lost NFL-bound receivers Makai Lemon and Ja’Kobi Lane, but Tanook Hines, Zacharyus Williams and running back Waymond Jordan give Maiava an experienced collection of skill-position options.

Riley is 9-0 in season openers, while USC has won all six of its previous meetings with San Jose State. The Trojans’ official game notes confirm that Saturday will be the Spartans’ seventh visit to the Coliseum. USC Athletics

San Jose State’s challenge is preventing USC from turning the afternoon into a track meet. The Spartans must create pressure without committing extra defenders, because frequent blitzes could leave their secondary isolated against USC’s speed.

For the Trojans, this matchup is less about winning than demonstrating defensive discipline. USC should have little difficulty scoring, but missed tackles and explosive plays against an overmatched opponent would create concerns before the schedule becomes more demanding.

The betting decision revolves around the enormous spread. USC could lead by five touchdowns and still fail to cover if Riley removes his starters early. San Jose State’s best opportunity may arrive in the fourth quarter against USC’s reserves.

There were no widely reported major late-week injuries materially changing the matchup as of Wednesday. Bettors should nevertheless watch USC’s pregame availability report because a favorite laying more than five touchdowns has little margin for a late backdoor cover.

NC State Wolfpack at Virginia Cavaliers

Kickoff: 3:30 p.m. ET
TV: ESPN
Location: Scott Stadium, Charlottesville, Virginia
Current consensus odds: Virginia -5.5; over/under 53.5
Moneyline: NC State approximately +160; Virginia approximately -190
Projected score: Virginia 28, NC State 27

Saturday’s most balanced Power Four matchup is technically a nonconference game, even though NC State and Virginia are both ACC members. The game does not count in the conference standings.

The teams produced an entertaining 35-31 NC State victory in 2025. Wolfpack quarterback CJ Bailey ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as NC State erased a late deficit. That result gives the Cavaliers both a useful scouting reference and a revenge angle.

Bailey’s mobility remains the central concern for Virginia. The Cavaliers must keep their edge defenders disciplined rather than allowing Bailey to escape pressure and turn broken plays into first downs. Running back Hollywood Smothers also gives the Wolfpack an explosive option capable of punishing aggressive fronts.

Virginia enters as the more heavily supported team in the market, with the spread reaching 5.5 points after opening closer to a field goal at some sportsbooks. The Cavaliers went 11-3 last season and won nine games against the spread, one of the ACC’s best marks.

Not Overseas

The venue changed the betting equation. This matchup was initially connected to a proposed game in Rio de Janeiro but will instead be played at Scott Stadium, giving Virginia a genuine home-field advantage.

NC State’s recent road performance presents a warning: the Wolfpack went 0-4 against the spread as a road underdog in 2025. Virginia, however, lost important experience from last year’s roster, making a price above a field goal less appealing.

The key question is whether Virginia can prevent Bailey and Smothers from controlling the game on early downs. If NC State repeatedly reaches third-and-short, this could remain within one possession all afternoon.

No confirmed late-week injury announcement had dramatically altered the spread as of Wednesday. Any change involving Bailey or Virginia’s starting quarterback would require an immediate reassessment.

Jacksonville State Gamecocks at North Dakota State Bison

Kickoff: 5:30 p.m. ET
TV: CBS Sports Network
Location: Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome, Fargo, North Dakota
Current consensus odds: North Dakota State -7; over/under 46.5
Moneyline: Jacksonville State approximately +230; North Dakota State approximately -265
Projected score: North Dakota State 30, Jacksonville State 17

North Dakota State does not receive a gentle introduction to FBS football.

The Bison begin their first season at the subdivision’s highest level against Jacksonville State, another former FCS powerhouse that successfully navigated its own transition. The matchup should provide an immediate measurement of whether North Dakota State can reproduce its championship formula against an FBS schedule.

NDSU’s identity remains centered on offensive-line play, a powerful rushing attack and control of possession. Although the Bison lost major backfield contributors, the infrastructure of their rushing system remains intact. Quarterback Caden Creel adds mobility and experience to an offense that will try to keep Jacksonville State’s defense on the field.

Who will step in?

Jacksonville State must replace important production, including running back Cam Cook, who transferred to West Virginia, and rebuild portions of its defensive front. The Gamecocks prefer tempo and are unlikely to spend the evening trying to match NDSU’s methodical style.

That contrast creates the game’s decisive matchup. If Jacksonville State generates explosive plays and forces the Bison to play from behind, it can disrupt NDSU’s preferred script. If North Dakota State establishes its running game and possesses the ball for 33 to 35 minutes, Jacksonville State’s reconstructed defensive front could wear down.

The Fargodome should provide one of Saturday’s strongest home-field environments. This is not simply a season opener; it is the first game of North Dakota State’s FBS era.

The consensus line has fluctuated between NDSU -6.5 and -7.5. A full seven is playable, but bettors should avoid chasing the favorite if the market moves through -7.5.

Sacramento State Hornets at Eastern Michigan Eagles

Kickoff: 6:30 p.m. ET
Streaming: ESPN+
Location: Rynearson Stadium, Ypsilanti, Michigan
Current consensus odds: Eastern Michigan -9.5; over/under 52.5
Moneyline: Sacramento State approximately +310; Eastern Michigan approximately -400
Projected score: Eastern Michigan 27, Sacramento State 21

Sacramento State begins its own FBS journey Saturday as a new member of the Mid-American Conference.

The Hornets arrive with substantial roster turnover. Quarterback Cardell Williams transferred to Maryland, while running backs Damian Henderson II and Jaquail Smith, receiver Ernest Campbell and offensive lineman Jose Soto followed former coach Brennan Marion to Colorado.

Sacramento State attempted to rebuild through the transfer market. Its incoming group includes defensive lineman Jamel Howard Jr. from Wisconsin, Nick Dimitris from Florida A&M and Isiah Chala from Fresno State, along with several junior-college additions. Sacramento State Athletics

Departing Talent

Eastern Michigan must replace considerable offensive production of its own. Running back Dontae McMillan departed after rushing for 897 yards, and the Eagles lost multiple experienced offensive linemen, including Everett Small to Rutgers and Owen Snively to Boston College.

That attrition makes Eastern Michigan’s price difficult to evaluate. The Eagles possess greater FBS experience and home-field stability, but asking a rebuilt offense to cover close to double digits creates risk.

Sacramento State’s best path is to create negative plays on defense and avoid obvious passing situations. The Hornets cannot allow Eastern Michigan to control the line and steadily build a two-score lead. Conversely, the Eagles should attack Sacramento State’s rebuilt offensive line and force the new-look Hornets to execute long drives.

Eastern Michigan is the more likely winner, but Sacramento State has enough transfer talent to remain competitive. The underdog becomes particularly attractive if the spread reaches +10 or higher.

New Mexico State Aggies at Florida State Seminoles

Kickoff: 7 p.m. ET
TV: The CW
Location: Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee, Florida
Current consensus odds: Florida State -30.5; over/under 52.5
Moneyline: New Mexico State approximately +2000; Florida State approximately -6500
Projected score: Florida State 45, New Mexico State 10

Few coaches enter Week 0 under more pressure than Florida State’s Mike Norvell.

Following another disappointing season, the Seminoles need more than a narrow victory against New Mexico State. They need a composed, convincing performance that suggests the program has finally regained traction.

Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels will start at quarterback after previously playing at Stanford. His experience and mobility should fit offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn’s system, while receiver Duce Robinson and speedster Micahi Danzy provide explosive-play potential.

Size Matters

Florida State also expects improved depth in the backfield and along a reworked offensive line. The Seminoles’ size advantage should be particularly noticeable against a New Mexico State defense that faces a significant increase in speed.

The Aggies return playmaking receiver TK King, but FCS transfer Trey Hedden must settle the quarterback position behind an overhauled offensive line. New Mexico State struggled to establish a consistent rushing attack last season, and becoming one-dimensional in Tallahassee would allow Florida State’s defensive front to attack without hesitation.

FSU declined to publish a conventional Week 0 depth chart. Norvell said modern personnel packages make a static list less meaningful, although withholding the chart also prevents New Mexico State from receiving additional preparation clues. Tomahawk Nation

The point spread is massive, but this is a game Florida State may approach aggressively. Daniels needs meaningful work in a new system, and Norvell cannot afford a sluggish opener. Florida State’s greatest threat to the cover may be an early substitution of its starters rather than New Mexico State consistently moving the ball.

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors at Stanford Cardinal

Kickoff: 7 p.m. ET
TV: ACC Network
Location: Stanford Stadium, Stanford, California
Current consensus odds: Stanford -3.5; over/under 48.5
Moneyline: Hawaii approximately +175; Stanford approximately -165
Projected score: Hawaii 24, Stanford 23

Hawaii may be the most dangerous underdog on Saturday’s board.

Quarterback Micah Alejado returns after throwing for 3,106 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions as a freshman. His accuracy and experience give the Rainbow Warriors an immediate advantage over many teams breaking in new offensive systems.

Stanford begins another transition under head coach Tavita Pritchard. New defensive coordinator Kris Richard brings extensive NFL experience and is shifting the Cardinal toward a four-man defensive front with a more aggressive philosophy.

That approach should create more pressure, but it also presents an opening for Alejado. If Hawaii’s offensive line handles the initial rush, the quarterback could find favorable matchups against a Stanford defense that struggled to prevent explosive plays last season.

Can The Cardinal get back to the good ole days?

Stanford finished 4-8 in 2025 and ranked 96th nationally in opponent expected points added, according to one current betting analysis. The Cardinal defense showed signs of improvement but now must learn another system after working under three defensive coordinators in three seasons. San Francisco Chronicle

Hawaii’s travel history always deserves consideration, but this is a manageable West Coast trip rather than a cross-country journey. The Rainbow Warriors also enter with greater quarterback continuity.

Stanford may own an advantage in size and defensive talent, but laying more than a field goal against an experienced passer is uncomfortable. Hawaii is capable of winning outright.

Memphis Tigers at UNLV Rebels

Kickoff: 10 p.m. ET
TV: FOX
Location: Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas
Verified MyBookie odds: UNLV -4.5 (-110); Memphis +4.5 (-110)
Total: 56.5
MyBookie moneyline: Memphis +149; UNLV -193
Projected score: UNLV 30, Memphis 28

Saturday’s finale could have consequences extending all the way to the College Football Playoff selection process.

Memphis and UNLV are projected contenders in the American and Mountain West conferences, respectively. With only the highest-ranked champion from outside the four power conferences guaranteed a playoff berth, head-to-head results between leading Group of Six programs could become important evidence in December.

UNLV enters with the greater continuity. Running back Jai’Den Thomas leads an offense expected to rank among the strongest outside the power conferences. The uncertainty surrounds quarterback.

Former Oklahoma and Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold arrived as the expected starter, but Alex Orji remained involved throughout camp. Coach Dan Mullen said both quarterbacks would play against Memphis, raising questions about whether UNLV has a productive competition or an unresolved problem.

New Coach, New Team

Memphis begins a new era under coach Charles Huff and brings a significantly reconstructed roster. Running back Dallan Hayden and receiver Tychaun Chapman give the Tigers enough talent to challenge a UNLV defense that struggled badly against the run in 2025. The Rebels ranked 127th nationally in rushing EPA allowed, according to Covers’ Week 0 analysis.

That defensive weakness could allow Memphis to shorten the game and keep UNLV’s offense on the sideline. The Tigers must also contain Thomas without committing so many defenders to the box that Arnold or Orji can attack isolated defensive backs.

MyBookie listed UNLV as a 4.5-point favorite Wednesday, with the Rebels priced at -193 on the moneyline and Memphis at +149. The sportsbook listed the total at 56.5. Those numbers differ from some other books offering UNLV -5.5 or -6, demonstrating why bettors should compare lines before wagering. MyBookie college football odds

Memphis plus the points is the preferred side at +4.5 or better. UNLV has the stronger continuity and home-field advantage, but its unsettled quarterback situation and vulnerable run defense make a comfortable victory far from certain.
