Why Is Mint Ice Cream So Polarizing?

I’m one of the weirdos who actually likes mint ice cream.

People get so grossed out when they hear that you like mint, but why? Few ice cream flavors seem to create such an immediate reaction. You either love mint ice cream, or you look at the person eating it like they just committed a crime.

The most common complaint I hear is simple: “Mint ice cream tastes like toothpaste.”

But wait… why is that a bad thing?

It’s actually pretty rare to find toothpaste flavors that aren’t mint. Major brands like Colgate and Crest have experimented with flavors such as chocolate and strawberry, but mint has remained the overwhelming favorite.

Obviously, mint must be doing something right.

So why is mint ice cream such a polarizing flavor?

Reason No. 1: We Associate Mint With Brushing Our Teeth

This might be the biggest reason people dislike mint ice cream.

For many of us, our first major experience with mint flavor came from brushing our teeth as children. We were told to put that strange minty paste in our mouths twice a day, every day.

Maybe some people never escaped that association.

When they taste mint ice cream, they don’t think about a refreshing dessert. Instead, their brains immediately go back to standing in front of the bathroom sink with a toothbrush.

You could almost call it toothpaste trauma.

I wonder what would happen if an entire generation grew up brushing their teeth with chocolate-flavored toothpaste.

Would those people eventually hate chocolate ice cream?

Probably not. But it makes you think.

Reason No. 2: Mint Is Usually Associated With Freshness, Not Dessert

Another reason mint ice cream can be difficult for some people is that we’re trained to associate mint with things that make our mouths feel clean.

Think about toothpaste, mouthwash, chewing gum, breath mints and even certain candies.

Mint is supposed to leave you feeling refreshed.

Ice cream, on the other hand, is supposed to be rich, sweet and indulgent.

Putting those two ideas together can be strange.

For mint ice cream fans, that’s exactly what makes the flavor work. The cold, creamy sweetness of ice cream combined with the coolness of mint creates something completely different from most traditional dessert flavors.

For everyone else, it apparently creates a dessert that tastes like a trip to the dentist.

Reason No. 3: The Chocolate-Mint Combination Is Either Brilliant or Terrible

Then there’s the chocolate.

Mint chocolate chip ice cream is one of the most recognizable versions of mint ice cream, and chocolate and mint can be an incredibly good combination.

The problem is that some people don’t think those flavors belong together.

Chocolate is rich, warm and sweet. Mint is cool, sharp and refreshing.

That’s either a perfect contrast or a complete disaster, depending on who you ask.

Personally, I think the chocolate chips make mint ice cream even better. You get the creamy mint flavor followed by little bursts of chocolate.

But if you already think mint tastes like toothpaste, adding chocolate chips isn’t exactly going to convince you otherwise.

Reason No. 4: Mint Has a Very Strong Flavor

There’s also no hiding from mint.

Strawberry ice cream can be subtle. Vanilla can be subtle. Even chocolate can vary dramatically in intensity.

Mint doesn’t really work that way.

When you eat mint ice cream, you know you’re eating mint ice cream.

That strong flavor can be refreshing to people who enjoy it, but overwhelming to people who don’t. And because mint has such a distinct taste, there isn’t much room for someone to say, “Well, I don’t really notice it.”

You definitely notice it.

Reason No. 5: People Have Very Strong Ice Cream Preferences

Let’s be honest: people take their ice cream seriously.

Some people will defend vanilla until their dying breath. Others insist chocolate is the only acceptable answer. Some want cookie dough, some want cookies and cream, and some apparently want to put fruit in their ice cream.

And then there are the mint chocolate chip people.

We tend to get lumped into a very specific category.

There seems to be no middle ground with mint ice cream. Nobody says, “It’s fine, I guess.”

The reaction is usually either:

“Mint chocolate chip is one of my favorite ice cream flavors.”

Or:

“That stuff tastes like toothpaste.”

Why I Still Love Mint Ice Cream

Maybe I’m just wired differently, but I don’t understand why tasting like toothpaste is automatically a dealbreaker.

If mint is good enough to dominate the toothpaste industry, why can’t it also be good enough for ice cream?

There’s something incredibly refreshing about a cold scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream. It’s sweet, creamy, cool and has just enough chocolate to balance everything out.

And yes, I realize how ridiculous it sounds to defend an ice cream flavor this passionately.

But I’ll stand by it.

Unfortunately, there’s one major problem right now.

I have a sinus infection, and I am craving mint ice cream badly.

Sadly, mucus and milk don’t exactly seem like a winning combination.

So for now, I’ll have to wait.

But once I’m feeling better, you already know what I’m getting.

Mint chocolate chip.

And if you think it tastes like toothpaste?

That’s fine.

More for me.

Final Verdict: Is Mint Ice Cream Good?

Mint ice cream is polarizing because it occupies a strange place in our brains. We associate mint with toothpaste, mouthwash and freshness, while we associate ice cream with sweetness and indulgence.

For some people, those two worlds don’t belong together.

For others, including me, that’s exactly why mint chocolate chip ice cream is so good.

So the next time someone tells you that mint ice cream tastes like toothpaste, remember this:

Maybe toothpaste tastes like mint ice cream.

And honestly, that’s not such a bad thing.
