Nebraska strengthened its claim to the No. 1 ranking with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-16 sweep of second-ranked Texas at the Players Era Women’s College Volleyball Championship in Las Vegas.

The Cornhuskers controlled the match through serving, blocking and efficient attacking. Nebraska hit .293 while limiting Texas to .152, recorded seven service aces and did not surrender an ace to the Longhorns.

Middle blocker Andi Jackson led Nebraska with nine kills on a .571 hitting percentage. Harper Murray contributed eight kills, and freshman Teraya Sigler added seven.

The result moved Nebraska to 2-0 and completed an impressive opening weekend after the Cornhuskers swept UNLV on Saturday. Texas fell to 1-1 after opening with a straight-set victory over No. 18 TCU.

Although a late-August match cannot settle the national championship race, Nebraska displayed the balance required to win one. The Cornhuskers pressured Texas from the service line, prevented the Longhorns from establishing a consistent attack and avoided the extended scoring droughts that often decide meetings between elite teams.

The next national poll should keep Nebraska comfortably in the top position. Texas may remain near the top as well, but the size of Sunday’s margin gives the Longhorns several early-season questions to address.

Stanford women’s soccer overwhelms Cal State Fullerton

Top-ranked Stanford continued its dominant opening to the women’s soccer season with a 7-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton.

Seven Cardinal players scored, demonstrating the attacking depth that makes Stanford an early national-championship favorite. Stanford led 2-0 at halftime and then scored five times after the break to turn a controlled performance into a rout.

The Cardinal have also defeated No. 17 UCLA 3-0 during their unbeaten start. Through four matches, Stanford has outscored its opponents 19-0.

That combination of scoring depth and defensive consistency separates Stanford from most early-season contenders. Opponents cannot concentrate exclusively on one forward, while the Cardinal’s possession and defensive organization have prevented teams from generating enough chances to apply sustained pressure.

Stanford men remain perfect with 2-1 win over UC Davis

Stanford’s No. 1 men’s soccer team also remained unbeaten, defeating UC Davis 2-1 at Cagan Stadium.

The Cardinal improved to 4-0 and completed a perfect four-match homestand. That run included a particularly important 1-0 victory over then-No. 2 San Diego on Thursday.

Sunday’s result was less comfortable. UC Davis became the first team this season to prevent Stanford from winning by either multiple goals or a clean sheet. The close contest may ultimately benefit the Cardinal by forcing them to protect a narrow advantage against a determined opponent.

Stanford will receive its first road test Friday against San Jose State. More demanding conference matches follow, including trips to North Carolina and Duke and home dates with Notre Dame, Virginia and Clemson.

LSU players compete under temporary eligibility order

LSU and Arizona played to a 1-1 women’s soccer draw Sunday in a match with significance extending beyond the scoreboard.

Ava Galligan gave LSU the lead shortly before halftime. Arizona sophomore Kyleigh Johnson equalized in the 66th minute with her first collegiate goal. Arizona finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots but could not produce a winner.

The larger story involved LSU fifth-year seniors Jazmin Ferguson and Jocelyn Ollivierre, who competed while protected by a temporary court order connected to litigation over NCAA and Southeastern Conference eligibility restrictions.

The players are among athletes challenging the treatment of members of the 2022 high-school class under the NCAA’s transition to an age-based eligibility system. Their participation illustrated how court decisions are now affecting active lineups rather than merely future roster planning.

Under the NCAA’s new model, many Division I athletes can receive as many as five years of eligibility if they enter college within the prescribed age window. Athletes who completed their fourth season during 2025-26 were generally excluded from receiving a new fifth year under the transition provisions.

The temporary relief does not represent a final judgment on the rules. It does, however, create uncertainty for schools and opponents when athletes in similar circumstances receive different eligibility outcomes based on individual litigation.

Maryland field hockey completes unbeaten opening weekend

No. 13 Maryland improved to 2-0 with a 3-1 victory over Temple.

Francisca Eschoyez scored twice from penalty-corner opportunities, while freshman Aida Ierubino added her second goal in as many collegiate matches. Temple reduced Maryland’s lead to 2-1 during the third quarter, but Eschoyez supplied the insurance goal late in the fourth.

The Terrapins opened the season Friday with a 3-0 victory over Drexel. Their five goals across the two matches came from several players, an encouraging sign for a team attempting to rebuild its attacking production.

Maryland’s defense also allowed only one goal during the weekend. The Terrapins will face a more revealing test when the schedule turns toward ranked opponents, but a 2-0 start gives them a sound foundation.

Baylor completes undefeated volleyball weekend in Hawai‘i

No. 21 Baylor defeated Georgia Southern in four sets to complete a 3-0 stay at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic.

The Bears won 25-22, 25-16, 23-25 and 25-21. Baylor had already swept San Diego and survived a five-set match against host Hawai‘i, giving the Bears victories under three different competitive circumstances.

Baylor’s ability to recover after dropping Sunday’s third set was particularly valuable. Georgia Southern had an opportunity to extend the match, but the Bears regained control during the fourth.

The undefeated weekend should help Baylor move upward in the national rankings. Its five-set road victory over Hawai‘i will carry the most résumé value, while the other two wins demonstrated that Baylor could maintain focus across a multiday tournament.
