MINNEAPOLIS — Golden State delivered one of its most impressive victories of the season Monday, knocking off the WNBA-leading Minnesota Lynx 80-66 on their home floor.
The Valkyries entered the game at 25-11 but were facing a Minnesota club that had lost only seven times all season. Golden State nevertheless controlled the second half after taking a narrow two-point advantage into halftime.
Minnesota struggled to find an offensive rhythm, shooting just 35.6 percent from the field and committing 18 turnovers. No Lynx player scored more than 13 points. Minnesota also played without Courtney Williams, whose absence left the Lynx without one of their important offensive creators.
Golden State took advantage. Tiffany Hayes and Veronica Burton helped lead a balanced Valkyries attack as Golden State controlled important stretches in the paint and on the glass.
The win improved the Valkyries to 26-11, while Minnesota fell to 31-8. Despite the loss, the Lynx remain firmly positioned atop the WNBA standings and close to securing the top playoff seed.
Turning Point: Golden State’s second-half defense. Minnesota remained within striking distance at halftime, but the Valkyries disrupted the Lynx offense after the break and prevented the league leaders from mounting a serious comeback.
Star of the Game: Golden State’s defense. Holding a 31-win Minnesota team to only 66 points while forcing 18 turnovers provided the foundation for one of the Valkyries’ biggest victories of the season.
Atlanta Dream 78, Los Angeles Sparks 71
LOS ANGELES — Angel Reese turned Atlanta’s 78-71 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks into a historic night, grabbing a WNBA-record 26 rebounds as the Dream completed a perfect four-game West Coast road trip.
Reese surpassed the previous single-game rebounding record established by Chamique Holdsclaw in 2003. She also broke the WNBA single-season rebounding record, reaching 458 boards while recording her 27th double-double of the year.
Reese finished with 11 points and 26 rebounds, including eight offensive boards. Allisha Gray scored 20 points, Rhyne Howard contributed 18 and Naz Hillmon added 12 as Atlanta improved to 25-13.
Los Angeles received an outstanding performance from Nneka Ogwumike, who recorded a season-high 27 points and 16 rebounds. Cameron Brink and Dearica Hamby each added 15 points, but the Sparks shot only 38 percent overall and struggled badly from behind the 3-point line.
Atlanta seized control with a 16-4 run early in the third quarter. Los Angeles made another push during the fourth, but the Dream protected their advantage and completed a 3-0 season sweep of the Sparks.
The defeat dropped Los Angeles to 13-25 and continued a difficult closing stretch for a Sparks team already eliminated from playoff contention.
Turning Point: Atlanta’s 16-4 third-quarter run. The Dream created the separation they needed immediately after halftime and withstood Los Angeles’ late attempt to get back into the game.
Star of the Game: Angel Reese, Atlanta — 11 points, WNBA-record 26 rebounds. Reese didn’t need a huge scoring night to dominate the game, rewriting both the single-game and single-season WNBA rebounding record books.
