ACC Football Preview: Miami Stands Above a Wide-Open Field of Contenders
The Hurricanes enter 2026 as the ACC’s only clear national championship threat, but SMU, Louisville, Clemson and several dangerous challengers could produce another unpredictable conference race.
The Atlantic Coast Conference enters the 2026 football season with one obvious favorite and almost unlimited possibilities beneath it.
Miami, fresh from a national championship game appearance, begins the year ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press poll and heavily favored to win the conference. No. 19 SMU and No. 24 Louisville are the ACC’s only other preseason Top 25 teams, while Clemson, Florida State, Pitt, California and Virginia received votes. ACC Sports
The conference’s lack of ranked depth compared with the SEC and Big Ten does not necessarily make its race easier to predict. Duke won the 2025 ACC championship despite entering the season outside the league’s leading tier. Virginia reached the title game after receiving little national attention. Meanwhile, traditional powers Clemson and Florida State combined for two deeply disappointing seasons.
Miami received 165 first-place votes in the conference’s preseason media poll. SMU finished second, followed by Louisville, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Virginia, NC State, Virginia Tech and Pitt. Seven schools received at least one first-place vote, demonstrating how unsettled the race becomes after Miami. ACC preseason poll
Scheduling adds another complication. Twelve teams will play nine conference games, while Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina will play eight ACC opponents and at least two Power Four nonconference games. ACC teams collectively face 25 Power Four nonconference opponents—the most of any league. ACC schedule announcement

The clear favorite
Miami Hurricanes
Projected record: 11-1
National-title odds: +1000
Miami has everything required to dominate the ACC: elite talent, recent playoff experience, an aggressive transfer operation and a quarterback capable of contending for the Heisman Trophy.
Duke transfer Darian Mensah takes over after guiding the Blue Devils to the ACC championship. Mensah’s accuracy, composure and experience should allow Miami to maintain an explosive passing game despite changes at several skill positions. Receiver Cooper Barkate gives him a proven target, while Missouri transfer Damon Wilson adds another disruptive presence to the defense.
Mario Cristobal has built Miami into one of the country’s most physical teams through recruiting and investment in the lines of scrimmage. The Hurricanes reached the national championship game last season without winning the ACC, but bookmakers now list them as an odds-on conference favorite.
Miami is approximately -150 to win the league, while its closest challengers sit near +750. That gap reflects both the Hurricanes’ talent and the absence of another obvious top-10 team. Tomahawk Nation
Realistic expectation: Eleven victories, an ACC Championship Game appearance and a top-four playoff seed. Anything short of reaching Charlotte would be a significant disappointment.

The leading challengers
SMU Mustangs
Projected record: 9-3
National-title odds: +10000
SMU has quickly transformed from an ambitious ACC newcomer into one of the conference’s most dependable programs.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings returns to lead an offense with experience, speed and enough depth to challenge Miami. His ability to extend plays gives the Mustangs an advantage against defenses unable to contain the pocket.
The program’s financial resources and aggressive recruiting approach have allowed SMU to build an ACC-caliber roster faster than many expected. The Mustangs’ greatest questions concern the defensive front and whether they can consistently control more physical opponents.
A September trip to Louisville will provide an immediate test. SMU’s 8½-win market total is the second-highest in the conference, with the over favored. BetMGM
Realistic expectation: Nine wins and serious contention for a return to the ACC Championship Game. SMU has a playoff path but probably cannot afford more than two regular-season losses.

Louisville Cardinals
Projected record: 9-3
National-title odds: +12000
Louisville may be the most dangerous alternative to Miami because of Jeff Brohm’s offensive record and a roster capable of creating explosive plays.
Ohio State transfer Lincoln Kienholz takes over at quarterback, while running back Isaac Brown gives the Cardinals a proven centerpiece. Brohm should use both players to create favorable matchups through tempo, formations and play-action passing.
Louisville’s season begins with No. 9 Ole Miss, giving the Cardinals an immediate opportunity to establish national credibility. SMU visits two weeks later in a game that could shape the ACC race before October.
The difficulty of those opening games contributes to Louisville’s modest 7½-win market total, despite its No. 24 ranking and strong conference-title odds.
Realistic expectation: Nine wins if Kienholz settles quickly. Louisville has the offensive ceiling to reach Charlotte but little time to work through early mistakes.
Clemson Tigers
Projected record: 8-4
National-title odds: +13000
Clemson enters a reset season carrying fewer expectations than at almost any point during Dabo Swinney’s championship era.
Quarterback Christopher Vizzina takes over an offense that needs greater consistency, explosiveness and confidence. Clemson still recruits enough talent to win the ACC, but recent teams have lacked the dynamic playmakers that once overwhelmed conference opponents.
The defense should remain the team’s stabilizing force. Clemson’s early schedule offers an opportunity to build momentum, with five of its first seven games at home. ESPN’s projections place the Tigers second in the conference despite ranking them only around No. 23 nationally, illustrating the gap between Miami and the rest of the league. ESPN ACC preview
Clemson also plays only eight league games, although nonconference matchups against LSU and South Carolina eliminate any suggestion of a soft schedule.
Realistic expectation: Eight victories and a return to respectability. Reaching Charlotte is realistic, but competing for a national title appears at least another year away.

The championship dark horses
Pitt Panthers
Projected record: 8-4
National-title odds: +40000
Pitt enters the season with one of the conference’s higher betting win totals but relatively little national attention.
Pat Narduzzi’s teams are generally at their best when the defensive front creates pressure without heavy blitzing and the offense protects the football. The Panthers should again be physical enough to make every conference opponent uncomfortable.
The issue is offensive consistency. Pitt has enough talent to win eight or nine games, but its margin for error narrows when the passing game becomes predictable.
The betting market set the Panthers’ total at 7½ victories, with the over favored. Conference-title odds near +2000 place Pitt among the ACC’s most credible second-tier contenders.
Realistic expectation: Eight wins and a chance to remain in the title race through November. Pitt is more likely to spoil another team’s playoff campaign than reach the playoff itself.
NC State Wolfpack
Projected record: 8-4
National-title odds: +50000
NC State may own the best schedule of any team outside Miami’s leading group.
The Wolfpack avoid Miami and play their most difficult conference road games against Florida State, North Carolina and Stanford—all teams that missed bowl eligibility last season. That creates a genuine path to eight or nine wins.
Dave Doeren’s program rarely overwhelms opponents, but it consistently develops defensive players and remains competitive in close games. The offense must generate more explosive plays to take advantage of the favorable schedule.
NC State was picked seventh in the preseason conference poll, although only 46 voting points separated fifth place from eighth. Backing the Pack
Realistic expectation: Eight victories, with an outside opportunity to reach Charlotte. NC State is a strong candidate to outperform its national profile.
Virginia Cavaliers
Projected record: 8-4
National-title odds: +40000
Virginia must prove that its run to the 2025 ACC Championship Game represented sustainable growth rather than one remarkable season.
The Cavaliers return a useful collection of experienced players and rank among the national leaders in total returning snaps. Defensive tackle Zion Wilson headlines the transfer additions and should improve the interior defense.
Virginia’s market win total stands at 7½, with the over receiving substantial support. That suggests bookmakers expect the Cavaliers to remain in the conference’s upper half even after losing several important contributors.
Repeating a championship-game appearance will be difficult, but the program now carries confidence and a clearer identity.
Realistic expectation: Eight wins and another quality bowl appearance. Virginia should remain competitive but may not recreate all the close-game success that fueled last season’s rise.
Virginia Tech Hokies
Projected record: 7-5
National-title odds: +35000
James Franklin’s arrival gives Virginia Tech one of the conference’s most compelling rebuilding projects.
Franklin brought a collection of former Penn State players and assembled one of the ACC’s highest-rated transfer groups. The Hokies also rank fourth nationally in returning production, an unusual combination of continuity and new talent following a coaching change. Troy cornerback Jaquez White represents one of the portal class’s most important additions.
Virginia Tech went 3-9 last season, so improvement should come quickly. Expecting Franklin to transform the Hokies into a championship team immediately, however, may be unrealistic against a difficult conference schedule.
The betting market set Virginia Tech’s win total at 6½ and heavily favored the over.
Realistic expectation: Seven wins and a bowl appearance, with eight possible if the offensive line and quarterback play stabilize. The long-term outlook is more exciting than the immediate championship probability.
California Golden Bears
Projected record: 7-5
National-title odds: +70000
California possesses one of the conference’s most exciting quarterbacks in Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.
His arm strength, mobility and improvisational ability give the Golden Bears upset potential against nearly any ACC opponent. Another year of development could place him among the country’s breakout stars.
Cal’s concern remains its ability to win consistently at the line of scrimmage. The Bears have enough skill talent to compete in high-scoring games, but protection breakdowns and defensive inconsistency could prevent them from moving into the conference’s leading tier.
Travel also remains an unavoidable factor for the ACC’s western members, particularly during a nine-game league schedule.
Realistic expectation: Seven wins and a bowl berth. Cal could finish higher if Sagapolutele develops into an all-conference quarterback.
The competitive middle
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Projected record: 6-6
National-title odds: +40000
Georgia Tech enters a transitional offensive season after losing quarterback Haynes King and backup Aaron Philo, who followed former offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner to Florida.
Brent Key has established a physical identity and made the Yellow Jackets consistently competitive, but rebuilding the quarterback room creates substantial uncertainty. The offensive line and running game must protect the new starter while the passing attack develops.
Georgia Tech plays only eight ACC games, but its nonconference schedule includes the annual meeting with Georgia. The Yellow Jackets’ 6½-win total reflects the possibility of another bowl season without assuming a smooth offensive transition.
Realistic expectation: Six wins and bowl eligibility. Replacing King’s leadership and dual-threat production may be the program’s largest challenge since Key took over.
Florida State Seminoles
Projected record: 6-6
National-title odds: +35000
Florida State begins 2026 with urgency surrounding Mike Norvell.
The Seminoles followed their 2023 championship-game run with a 7-18 record across the next two seasons. Another losing year would place Norvell’s future in serious jeopardy. College Football News
Florida State still has more raw talent than most ACC teams, but roster turnover, quarterback questions and inconsistent line play make the Seminoles difficult to trust. A nonconference trip to Alabama adds another probable loss to an already challenging schedule.
The market places Florida State’s win total at 6½, accurately reflecting a team with the talent to win eight games but recent performance suggesting considerably less.
Realistic expectation: Six wins and a bowl berth. Anything worse could trigger another coaching change in Tallahassee.
Duke Blue Devils
Projected record: 6-6
National-title odds: +80000
Duke enters the season as the defending ACC champion but faces a major reconstruction after quarterback Darian Mensah transferred to Miami.
The Blue Devils’ title run demonstrated the value of discipline, game planning and steady quarterback play. Replacing Mensah’s production will determine whether Duke remains an upper-half team or falls toward the bottom of the standings.
The defense and overall program structure should prevent a complete collapse. Still, the betting market’s 5½-win total shows how dramatically expectations have changed.
Every meeting with Miami will now carry an additional storyline after the Hurricanes acquired the quarterback who led Duke to its championship.
Realistic expectation: Six wins and a bowl game. Repeating as conference champion would rank among the season’s greatest surprises.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Projected record: 6-6
National-title odds: +80000
Wake Forest improved significantly on defense last season, but its secondary must replace several of the players responsible for that progress.
Davaughn Patterson moves to strong safety, while Rushaun Tongue returns from injury at free safety. Cornerback represents the greatest concern following the departures of Karon Prunty and Lardarius Webb Jr. Transfers Deuce Blades II and Bernard Causey III will have opportunities to play immediately.
The Demon Deacons’ offense must support the reconstructed defense by controlling possession and avoiding turnovers. A 5½-win total gives Wake a reasonable chance to return to the postseason.
Realistic expectation: Six wins, with the final bowl spot likely decided during the closing weeks of the season.
Programs facing difficult climbs
Syracuse Orange
Projected record: 5-7
National-title odds: +80000
Syracuse faces a difficult schedule containing preseason-ranked Notre Dame, SMU and Louisville. Clemson, Pitt, Cal and Virginia also received votes in the AP poll, increasing the possibility that the Orange will face six or seven ranked opponents. Nunes Magician
Fran Brown continues building the roster through recruiting and the portal, but quarterback uncertainty and uneven line play remain obstacles. Syracuse must win its toss-up home games because road opportunities will be limited.
Realistic expectation: Five wins. Reaching bowl eligibility would represent a successful response to one of the conference’s more difficult schedules.
North Carolina Tar Heels
Projected record: 5-7
National-title odds: +80000
North Carolina is attempting to restore stability after a chaotic 2025 season filled with organizational distractions and inconsistent performance.
The Tar Heels benefited from a more conventional offseason, with regular spring practices, player-led workouts and clearer leadership. Those improvements should make the team more organized, but significant roster weaknesses remain.
North Carolina plays eight ACC games but faces multiple challenging nonconference opponents. The market win total of 4½ suggests modest improvement without expecting an immediate return to contention.
Realistic expectation: Five wins. Better organization should produce a more competitive team, although bowl eligibility remains uncertain.
Boston College Eagles
Projected record: 4-8
National-title odds: Off board
Boston College enters an important season under Bill O’Brien with one of the conference’s lowest projected win totals.
Running back Evan Dickens arrives through the portal and could become an immediate offensive centerpiece. The Eagles must improve their quarterback efficiency and create more favorable down-and-distance situations.
The defense has enough experience to keep Boston College in games, but offensive limitations and a difficult schedule could repeatedly leave it without room for mistakes.
Realistic expectation: Four wins. The Eagles need a significant offensive improvement to reach bowl eligibility.
Stanford Cardinal
Projected record: 4-8
National-title odds: +100000
Stanford continues rebuilding a roster that has struggled to match the size, speed and depth of established ACC programs.
The Cardinal’s long-term approach emphasizes high school development and roster stability, but the transfer era makes patience increasingly difficult. Cross-country travel and a nine-game conference schedule create additional challenges.
Stanford should be more competitive, particularly at home, and has enough opportunities to surpass its 3½-win total. Contending for the conference, however, remains several roster cycles away.
Realistic expectation: Four wins and incremental progress. Bowl eligibility would require multiple upsets.

Final analysis
Miami is the ACC’s best team by a substantial margin and the conference’s only clear national championship contender. The Hurricanes have the quarterback, roster and resources to win the league comfortably, but their national expectations leave almost no tolerance for an upset.
The race for the second championship-game position is far less predictable. SMU and Louisville offer the most established offenses. Clemson still possesses championship-level talent, while Pitt, NC State and Virginia have credible paths through the schedule. Virginia Tech may have the conference’s greatest potential for rapid improvement under Franklin.
The uneven transition to nine conference games also matters. Twelve programs must navigate an additional ACC opponent, while five play eight league games and a stronger nonconference slate. Differences in opponent strength could complicate the standings and tiebreakers late in the season.
The ACC does not possess the top-to-bottom power of the SEC or Big Ten. What it does have is competitive balance. Outside Miami, very little separates the teams projected to finish second from those projected to finish ninth.
That makes the conference vulnerable nationally but fascinating internally. Miami should win it. The more difficult question is identifying which of the ACC’s many flawed but dangerous challengers will survive long enough to meet the Hurricanes in Charlotte.
