Arozarena delivers a spectacular finish in Seattle, Bleday hits for the cycle and Philadelphia extends its winning streak

Saturday’s Major League Baseball schedule delivered nearly everything imaginable: a cycle, a near no-hitter, an extra-inning walk-off and several important results in increasingly competitive postseason races.

The Philadelphia Phillies extended baseball’s longest active winning streak, the Milwaukee Brewers maintained MLB’s best record and the Los Angeles Dodgers continued pulling away in the National League West. Here is a game-by-game recap of all 15 contests played Saturday, Aug. 22.

Blue Jays 4, Yankees 3

Dylan Cease carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning and Toronto held off a late New York rally. Cease did not surrender a hit until two outs in the seventh, ultimately earning his eighth victory after allowing two runs across 6⅔ innings. George Springer, Charles McAdoo and Nathan Lukes delivered run-scoring hits as Toronto collected 15 hits. The Yankees scored twice in the eighth but could not erase the deficit, with Louie Varland earning his 29th save. New York starter Ryan Weathers left early with an injury.

Star of the Game: Dylan Cease, Blue Jays — Took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

Brewers 4, Braves 1

Jake Bauers launched a two-run homer during a three-run third inning as Milwaukee secured its MLB-leading 81st victory. An error by Atlanta pitcher Martín Pérez extended the inning and allowed all three runs to score unearned. Logan Henderson settled down after allowing a first-inning run, limiting the Braves to five hits over six innings. William Contreras contributed two hits, an RBI and a run. Marlins 4, Nationals 2

Miami scored four times over the first four innings and received strong pitching from Eury Pérez. Otto Lopez opened the scoring with a two-run single in the first, Heriberto Hernández homered in the second and Jakob Marsee added a solo shot in the fourth. Washington managed only three hits, scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth. Pérez improved to 7-9 after holding the Nationals to two runs, while Calvin Faucher recorded his second save. The victory was Miami’s second straight.

Phillies 12, Cardinals 3

Philadelphia scored three runs in the first, four in the third and four more in the sixth to extend its winning streak to eight games. Bryce Harper delivered the biggest blow with a three-run homer, while the Phillies finished with 15 hits. Andrew Painter produced one of his best starts of the season, allowing one run on five hits over seven innings while striking out eight without issuing a walk. St. Louis managed solitary runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth but never seriously threatened.

Orioles 3, Rays 2 — 10 innings

Baltimore rallied from a pair of one-run deficits and defeated Tampa Bay in extra innings. Samuel Basallo tied the score with a two-run pinch-hit homer in the eighth, erasing the Rays’ 2-0 advantage. Neither club scored in the ninth before Baltimore pushed home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. Rico Garcia earned the victory after a scoreless inning. Tampa Bay’s third consecutive loss reduced its AL East advantage over the Yankees to three games.

Star of the Game: Samuel Basallo, Orioles — Game-tying two-run homer in the eighth.

Angels 3, Rangers 0

Ryan Johnson carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and combined with the bullpen on a one-hit shutout. Johnson surrendered Texas’ only hit while completing seven scoreless innings, walking two and striking out three. The Angels scored in the first, sixth and eighth while collecting 10 hits. Ryan Watson handled the ninth for his second save. Texas dropped to 64-66 and fell into a tie with Cleveland for the final American League wild-card position.

Athletics 4, Astros 3

The Athletics scored three times in the eighth inning to erase a 3-1 deficit and stun Houston. Lawrence Butler finished with two hits, an RBI, a run and a walk as the Athletics collected 10 hits. Houston had moved in front with two runs in the seventh, only for its bullpen to surrender the lead one inning later. Luis Medina earned the victory, while José Alvarado recorded his third save. The loss dropped the AL West-leading Astros to an even 65-65.

Star of the Game: Lawrence Butler, Athletics — Two hits and an RBI in the comeback victory.

Mets 10, White Sox 5

Luis Robert Jr. haunted his former team with two home runs and three RBIs as New York pounded out 16 hits. The Mets scored three runs in the third, three in the fifth and two in the ninth to pull away. Every New York starter reached base at least once as the visitors repeatedly pressured Chicago’s pitching staff. Will Warren earned the victory in relief, while White Sox starter Luis Castillo was charged with seven runs and fell to 4-10.

Royals 3, Tigers 1

Michael Wacha delivered seven strong innings and Kansas City extended its winning streak to seven games. Wacha allowed one run on three hits, walked one and struck out six while improving to 7-8. The Royals scored single runs in the third, fourth and sixth, building enough support despite recording only five hits. Craig Kimbrel worked the ninth for his first save of the season. Detroit lost its fourth straight and managed only three hits.

Dodgers 4, Pirates 3

Los Angeles recovered from an early three-run deficit and recorded its fifth consecutive victory. Pittsburgh scored three times in the first inning, but the Dodgers answered with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Max Muncy reached base four times, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and a walk. Tarik Skubal settled down after the difficult opening inning and earned his eighth victory, while Tanner Scott collected his 19th save.

Mariners 5, Cubs 4

Randy Arozarena completed a remarkable all-around performance by hitting a walk-off home run in the ninth. Arozarena homered twice, drove in three runs and also robbed Chicago of a home run in the outfield. The Cubs scored three times in the sixth to take a 4-2 advantage, but Seattle answered with three runs in the ninth. Arozarena’s decisive blast handed Chicago its third consecutive loss and gave the Mariners their second straight victory.

Red Sox 3, Giants 2

Boston scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to turn a 2-0 deficit into a dramatic victory. San Francisco held the Red Sox scoreless for eight innings after scoring single runs in the first and third. Boston finally broke through against the Giants’ bullpen, with Nick Sogard contributing two hits, including a double, an RBI and two walks. Richard Olds earned his first major-league victory as Boston extended its winning streak to two games.

Reds 11, Diamondbacks 5

JJ Bleday hit for the cycle as Cincinnati erupted for 16 hits and 11 runs. Bleday finished 4-for-6 with a single, double, triple, home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Cincinnati scored in seven different innings, including three runs in the fourth and two in the seventh. Arizona produced 10 hits but could not keep pace. Rhett Lowder earned his fifth victory, while Michael Soroka allowed six runs and fell to 8-4.

Star of the Game: JJ Bleday, Reds — Hit for the cycle and drove in three runs.

Guardians 4, Rockies 3

Jo Adell homered and drove in three runs as Cleveland won its third consecutive game. Adell’s 20th homer helped build an early lead, and he later scored the decisive run on Patrick Bailey’s sixth-inning single. Tanner Bibee completed six innings of two-run baseball, striking out six and earning his first victory since July 20. Padres 7, Twins 5

San Diego scored five times across the seventh and eighth innings to complete a comeback at Petco Park. Minnesota built a 5-1 lead through four innings, but the Padres gradually cut into the deficit before surging ahead with four runs in the seventh. Jake Cronenworth collected two doubles, drove in two runs and scored twice. Griffin Canning earned the victory in relief, while Mason Miller worked the ninth for his 32nd save. San Diego moved 10 games over .500.
