Upsets, Injuries and Farewells Dominate Busy Day in Sports

Baseball races tighten, tennis stars tumble and the WNBA prepares to say goodbye to one of its most influential players.

The sporting world delivered a full slate of drama Wednesday, with controversial calls shaping baseball’s postseason race, two No. 1 seeds falling in Cincinnati and significant injury news arriving from NFL and WNBA training rooms.

No announcement carried more historical weight than Nneka Ogwumike’s decision to retire at the conclusion of the WNBA season. The 36-year-old Los Angeles Sparks forward will close a decorated 15-year career that includes 11 All-Star selections, a league championship and the 2016 Most Valuable Player award.

Ogwumike, who also serves as president of the players’ union, spent her first 12 seasons with Los Angeles, played two years in Seattle and returned to the Sparks for her final campaign. She is averaging 16.9 points and 8.7 rebounds this season.

Her influence has extended far beyond the court, particularly through her representation of players during a transformative period for women’s basketball.

“I feel very fulfilled,” Ogwumike said while announcing her decision. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said she will leave the league “much better than she found it.” Reuters

The league also received difficult news from Dallas. Wings rookie Azzi Fudd, the first overall selection in the 2026 draft, was ruled out for the remainder of the season because of persistent soreness in her right knee.

Fudd will undergo an arthroscopic procedure after averaging 13.1 points in 30 games. The former Connecticut star led all WNBA rookies in steals per game and ranked third among first-year players in scoring. Her absence is a major blow to a Dallas team fighting to secure its postseason position. The Guardian

Baseball’s Wild Night

The New York Yankees strengthened their position in the American League race with a contentious 5-3 victory over Baltimore.

With the score tied in the seventh inning, Orioles slugger Pete Alonso sent a towering drive toward the left-field foul pole that appeared to give Baltimore the lead. The ball was ruled foul, however, and the call remained unchanged after replay review. Alonso eventually struck out.

New York capitalized in the eighth. George Lombard Jr. beat out a go-ahead infield single before Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored an insurance run on a wild pitch. The victory clinched both the series and the season series for the Yankees while leaving Baltimore 1½ games out of a wild-card position. MLB

Kansas City produced the day’s largest comeback, scoring seven times in the eighth inning to defeat the Athletics 9-7. John Rave supplied the decisive blow with a bases-clearing, go-ahead triple after the Athletics had carried a 5-2 advantage into the inning. MLB

Elsewhere, Nolan Arenado’s broken-bat single sparked a two-run 10th inning as Arizona edged Boston 7-6. The Dodgers also required extra innings, defeating Colorado 6-4 in 10.

Pittsburgh beat Detroit 4-3 on a walk-off home run, while Minnesota completed a three-game sweep of Atlanta with a 6-4 victory. The White Sox ended an eight-game losing streak at Wrigley Field by shutting out the Cubs 3-0.

San Francisco’s Matt Wilkinson made his major-league debut as an opener in a 1-0 victory over Cleveland, and Cincinnati rallied past St. Louis 5-4 behind Sal Stewart’s three-run homer. Tampa Bay held off Toronto 7-6, Houston edged the Angels 3-2 and Washington blanked Texas 6-0. Complete August 19 scoreboard

Top Seeds Tumble in Cincinnati

The Cincinnati Open produced a pair of headline-making upsets.

Twenty-year-old Czech Sara Bejlek recorded the biggest victory of her career by defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 7-6 (7), 6-4. Bejlek recovered from a 5-1 deficit in the first-set tiebreak and from 4-1 down in the second set to earn her first victory over a top-10 opponent.

The loss also created an opening at the top of the women’s rankings: Elena Rybakina can overtake Sabalenka by advancing to the Cincinnati final.

In the men’s draw, American Tommy Paul saved a match point and rallied past top seed Alexander Zverev 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4. Paul trailed 4-2 in the deciding set before winning four consecutive games to reach his first Cincinnati quarterfinal. Reuters

The tennis world was shaken by separate news involving Nick Kyrgios. The former Wimbledon finalist was provisionally suspended after testing positive for a cocaine metabolite in a sample collected at the Mallorca tournament in June.

Kyrgios accepted responsibility and described the result as a “huge mistake.” His suspension has been in effect since August 4, and he is barred from playing, coaching at or attending sanctioned tournaments while the case is reviewed. Reuters

NFL Camps Hit by Injuries

Several teams suffered important setbacks as the NFL preseason moved closer to its final weekend.

Houston Texans receiver Jayden Higgins reportedly tore his ACL during a joint practice with Las Vegas and is expected to miss the entire season. The second-year receiver had been projected to play a major role alongside Nico Collins in C.J. Stroud’s offense.

Washington Commanders center Tyler Biadasz also sustained ACL damage and is expected to be sidelined indefinitely. In New Orleans, running back Alvin Kamara reportedly suffered an MCL injury that will keep him out for at least a month.

The Seattle Seahawks, meanwhile, added a notable veteran to their secondary by bringing in two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs. The 27-year-old arrives after previous stops with Dallas and Green Bay. ESPN’s August 19 NFL news archive

Soccer and Basketball Notes

Victor Wembanyama was named captain of the French national team for its upcoming FIBA World Cup qualifying games, another leadership milestone for the San Antonio Spurs star.

On the soccer field, Lee Kang-in scored in his Atlético Madrid debut as the club opened its La Liga season with a victory over Málaga.

Major League Soccer’s Wednesday schedule included several tight contests. Philadelphia and Inter Miami played to a 2-2 draw, Toronto and Charlotte finished 3-3, Cincinnati defeated New York City FC 2-1 and the Los Angeles Galaxy edged San Jose 1-0. Chicago, Nashville, New England and Montreal also collected victories.

It was a day defined by changing fortunes: a basketball great prepared for her farewell, promising seasons were interrupted by injury, baseball games turned on inches and tennis favorites discovered how quickly momentum can disappear.
